Como viene siendo habitual hemos seleccionado los anuncios que a nuestro parecer tienen mejor banda musical , hoy os traemos dos. El anuncio del programala Caja Roja de T5 y el anuncio NO HUNGER.
Una película inexistente que puede mobilizar el mundo.

Se trata de una campaña de la ONG Acción contra el hambre. Su objetivo es hacer una película que mueva el mundo entero. Pero para que eso suceda, quieren que la dirija Al Gore, ganador de un Oscar y de un Premio Nobel. Este documental puede cambiar las conciencias del mundo y Acción Contra el Hambre lo sabe.

Aquí os mostramos el trailer que algunas cadenas como La Sexta ya se han unido como colaboradores a expandir esta iniciativa. También decir que algunas personalidades ya se han pronunciado a favor de éste proyecto.

Dover surgió en las afueras de Madrid, en unos pequeños locales de ensayo en Boadilla del Monte, a comienzos de la década de los 90 cuando las hermanas Llanos decidieron formar una banda de rock alentadas por la escena alternativa irradiada desde Seattle. El nombre del grupo surgió en 1992 del nombre de una marca de ropa de la tienda que tenia la madre de las hermanas en Majadahonda. En 1994, el batería Jesús Antúnez y el bajista Álvaro Gómez se unieron a la banda. Una de las maquetas del grupo fue a parar al programa de radio Disco Grande de RNE Radio 3. La banda firmó entonces un contrato de un año con la pequeña discográfica independiente Everlasting-Caroline. Su álbum debut Sister de 1995 careció de promoción y se vendió poco; sin embargo, el fanzine español Mondo Sonoro lo incluyó entre los 10 mejores álbumes nacionales de aquel año.

Tras concluir su primer contrato, firmaron con el sello independiente Subterfuge Records, el cual produjo su segundo álbum Devil Came to Me. Este álbum resultó ser un éxito sin precedentes en la escena independiente española. La relación de la banda con Subterfuge Records se deterioró y tras ello firmaron con Chrysalis Records. En 1998, crearon su propio sello Loli Jackson Records. Al año siguiente grabaron su tercer álbum Late at night en Seattle, con el que promocionaron grandes éxitos como la canción "DJ", ó "Cherry Lee" que fué popularizada en un spot publicitario del por entonces reciente Peugeot 206.

En 2003, lanzaron su quinto álbum The Flame, con un sonido más pop. En mayo de 2005 el bajista Álvaro Díez es expulsado del grupo y sustituido por Samuel Titos, antiguo guitarrista y vocalista de Sperm.

En el mes de octubre de 2006 sacaron un nuevo álbum llamado, Follow the city lights, producido por Daniel Alcover. Dover cambia radicalmente de estilo introduciendo arreglos electrónicos en su música y abandonando el estilo grunge por completo para llegar a un público más amplio. El primer single de este disco fue "Let me out", que recibió un Premio Ondas por mejor canción en 2006.[1] Además, consiguió ser número 1 en las listas del programa Los 40 principales durante varias semanas[2] El segundo single extraído de este disco fue "Do ya". También han sacado un tercero, Keep on moving.

Para sus conciertos en directo cambiaron las canciones anteriores al último disco para adecuarlas al nuevo estilo, alterando en ocasiones la letra (por ejemplo en la canción DJ, que anteriormente rezaba "DJ, don't do this to me") y sobre todo el ritmo. Con este cambio su número de fans aumentó considerablemente y confirió al grupo una imagen más popera. Este cambio se concreta en que las canciones cuentan con más presencia en la voz de Cristina Llanos, que quedaba muy diluida en su anterior etapa. Con este cambio, lejos de decepcionar a sus numerosos fans, han conseguido llegar a un espectro mucho más amplio gracias a un sonido fresco, rítmico y acorde con las tendencias más vanguardistas.

En noviembre de 2007 sacan el primer doble disco recopilatorio de Dover, titulado " 2", que contiene los éxitos de Dover en su versión electro pop, además de un tema inédito llamado Soldier.

Italia homenajea al tenor Pavarotti en el primer aniversario de su muerte

Culminarán en la noche con la interpretación de 'Requiem' de Verdi.

Con una misa en el monasterio de Baggiovara y un homenaje en el cementerio donde está enterrado comenzaron en Módena las conmemoraciones del primer aniversario de la muerte de Luciano Pavarotti, que culminarán en la noche con la interpretación de la 'Misa de Requiem', de Verdi, en el Teatro Municipal.

La norteña Módena, donde nació Pavarotti hace 72 años, recordó hoy a su hijo más famoso en todos los rincones de la ciudad emiliana.

Los escaparates de las tiendas exhiben fotos de Pavarotti, discos, libros e imágenes del tenorDesde primeras horas y durante toda la jornada la voz de 'Big Luciano' y las óperas que interpretó se escucharon por todas las calles, gracias a un sistema de hilo musical instalado por el Ayuntamiento.
Los escaparates de las tiendas, especialmente las del centro, exhiben fotos de Pavarotti, discos, libros, imágenes del tenor y otro material relacionado con el famoso cantante, fallecido el 6 de septiembre del 2007 en la ciudad que le vio nacer debido a un cáncer de páncreas.

La jornada en recuerdo de Pavarotti comenzó con un misa celebrada en el monasterio de Baggiovara, a la que asistieron Giuliana, Cristina y Lorenza, las tres hijas que tuvo el tenor con su primera esposa, Adua Veroni. También asistió el alcalde de Módena, Giorgio Pighi; y la hermana del tenor, Gabriella.

Después los homenajes se trasladaron al cementerio de Montale, donde descansan sus restos junto a los de sus padres, Fernando y Adele, y de Riccardo, el hijo que tuvo con su segunda esposa, Nicoletta Mantovani, que no sobrevivió al parto en el que nació su hija Alice.

'Misa de Requiem' por el tenor

El acto más importante de homenaje a Pavarotti será esta noche, cuando en el Teatro Municipal, que lleva su nombre, la Orquesta y Coros del Teatro Reggio, dirigida por Aldo Sisillo, interprete la "Misa de Requiem", de Verdi. Mañana, día 7, la orquesta repetirá el concierto. En esta jornada, el Presidente de la República, Giorgio Napolitano, envió un mensaje al alcalde Pighi en el que alabó las iniciativas en honor de Pavarotti, del que dijo era "inimitable".

"La muerte de Pavarotti ha privado al mundo de la lírica de un protagonista absoluto, del que recordaremos durante muchos años la profunda maestría en el arte del canto, la intensidad expresiva, su humanidad y el compromiso social que lo convirtieron en una figura conocida y apreciada en todo el mundo y para muchos inimitable", escribió el Jefe del Estado.

Napolitano agregó que la "extraordinaria herencia" artística de Pavarotti pertenece al patrimonio universal de la música "y contribuye a mantener viva la sensibilidad hacia una forma expresiva que ha tenido y aún conserva un gran apoyo popular".

Versión especial de 'La Bohême'

Además de en Módena, en la cercana ciudad de Bolonia se oficiará otra misa por el alma del tenor, que se celebrará en la iglesia parroquial de San Juan del Monte, oficiará el obispo auxiliar, Ernesto Vecchi, y a la que asistirá la viuda, Nicoletta Mantovani.

Coincidiendo con este primer aniversario, la casa de discos Decca, que en los últimos meses ya reeditó las obras más célebres del tenor, anunció que sacará en fechas próximas una versión especial de La Bohême, la histórica ópera que interpretó Pavarotti con Mirella Freni y dirigió Herbert von Karajan con la Filarmónica de Berlín.

Además del concierto en el Teatro Municipal "Luciano Pavarotti", Módena homenajea también a su hijo más famoso con la exposición fotográfica "Luciano Pavarotti y Módena". Se trata de un gran panel de dos metros de altura y 35 metros de largo en el que se exponen las 17 fotografías consideradas más significativas del tenor.

Spears, 'dando el cante' repetidamente

La artista ha sido nominada a su tercer MTV hace una semana.

La cantante Britney Spears tiene motivos musicales para sonreír... pero también para llorar. Entre los primeros, su tercera nominación a los premios MTV, hecha pública el 16 de agosto. Entre los segundos, el carrusel de vídeos que recopilan actuaciones donde los desafines y playbacks son la nota dominante.

Al igual que sucedió hace años con Enrique Iglesias y su famoso playback con el tema Rhythm Divine, los despropósitos vocales de la artista norteamericana sirven de argumento para los críticos, y de mofa para los simplemente aficionados.

Las grabaciones, presuntamente obtenidas por los técnicos de sonido encargados de los conciertos de Spears (y que no coincididen con lo que el público escuchó durante los mismos), llevarían fecha anterior a octubre de 2007, cuando se publicó Blackout, su quinto trabajo de estudio hasta el momento.

A pesar de estos contratiempos, la cantante regresó en mayo a los estudios de grabación de la mano de los productores J.R. Rotem y Sean Garrett para empezar a trabajar en su próximo disco. Rotem aseguró que la cantante "es una maestra en lo que hace y tiene mucha más experiencia que mucha gente, así que siempre es bonito trabajar con ella". El nuevo trabajo, según ha confirmado, aparecerá a lo largo de 2009.

Ya circula en la Red parte del nuevo material de U2... ¿por un despiste de Bono?

No es un secreto que U2 vaya a sacar un nuevo trabajo discográfico antes de finales de este año.

Alguien grabó al cantante de la banda mientras éste escuchaba el nuevo material a todo volumen en su residencia francesa.

¿Podría ser una campaña de promoción previa a la venta del disco?No es la primera vez que les sucede algo parecido

No es un secreto que U2 vaya a sacar un nuevo trabajo discográfico antes de finales de este año, presumiblemente en noviembre.
Por supuesto, la banda irlandesa rara vez tiene momentos en los que desaparece del panorama musical, siempre está 'en la cresta de la ola'. Últimamente, Bono, The Edge, Larry Mullen Jr. y Adam Clayton han puesto a la venta, tras el aniversario y la edición especial de 'The Joshua Tree', las remasterizaciones de sus tres primeros álbumes: 'Boy', 'October' y 'War', también más recientemente la del directo 'Under a Blood Red Sky', han presentado por todo el mundo la película U2 3D -en España no se estrenará hasta el próximo 3 de octubre-, han tenido que salir a desmentir que fuesen a poner en marcha una gira para la que se estaban vendiendo entradas en internet. Una estafa, vamos...

Parece ser que alguien avispado le dio al botón de 'REC' para luego difundir tan valioso materialY es que U2, pese llevar en la cima algo menos de 30 años, sigue siendo uno de los grupos más mediáticos del momento, de los pocos -se cuentan con los dedos de una mano- que aún hoy día siguen llenando grandes estadios en todo el mundo, de los que poco marketing necesitan para vender discos. Y, si no, al tiempo con su nuevo trabajo.

Precisamente por ese nuevo disco la banda irlandesa sale ahora a la palestra. Resulta que hay parte del nuevo material que ya circula por internet, en las redes p2p, youtube... parece ser que un descuido de Bono, que se encontraba en su residencia francesa escuchando a todo volumen algunas pistas no reparó en que alguien podría estar al acecho, grabadora en mano.

Y sí, parece ser que alguien avispado le dio al botón de 'REC' para luego difundir tan valioso material. Y he aquí un fragmento de la prueba...

Muchos ya apuntan al enfado monumental que se habrá llevado Paul McGuinness, manager del grupo y enemigo acérrimo del peer to peer . Sin embargo, si se analiza en profundidad la calidad de la, por otro lado lógica, pésima grabación, no es difícil deducir que más que enfadado debería estar contento si se atiene las circunstancias:

1. El producto nada tiene que ver con el robo que se hizo durante la grabación de Achtung Baby, que más tarde derivó en el disco pirataThe New U2: Rehearsals and Full Versions, y luego se convirtió en 'Salomé' (Outtakes), un trabajo triple cargado con tracks de estudio que la banda había grabado para inspirarse, a modo de ideas, en formato DAT.

2. La calidad es lo suficientemente mala como para que nadie se quede con ella en lugar de con el disco.

3. La calidad es lo suficientemente mala como para que sólo pueda servir para levantar expectación sobre el nuevo trabajo de la banda.

Cabe preguntarse si ésta podría ser otra forma de promocionar la obra...No olvidemos que ya les ha pasado algún caso parecido en otras ocasiones. Les sucedió en 2004, cuando perdieron una copia de 'How To Dismantle an Atomic Bomb', también con el mencionando 'Achtung Baby' y antes de que saliera 'October' también tuvieron un incidente con las letras. Por otro lado, U2 lleva tiempo promocionando lo que será su próximo disco. Ya en febrero el propio Daniel Lanois, co-productor junto con Brian Eno, miembro de Roxy Music, decía que "la banda está preparando una obra maestra" y que probablemente se trataría de un disco doble.

Con todos estos datos, ahora cabe preguntarse si ésta podría ser otra forma de promocionar la obra... ¿ese supuesto descuido de Bono pudo ser a propósito? y la persona que pasaba por allí, ¿lo hizo por casualidad? ¿conocía toda la discografía de U2, sabía que allí vivía Bono y que ese material era nuevo? Puede ser, por supuesto.

Lo que está claro, en cualquier caso, es que los seguidores de U2 están de enhorabuena porque ya tienen alguna pista más sobre lo nuevo de los irlandeses. El audio, pese a no distinguirse demasiado entre lo que parecen ser olas, pisadas y grillos, eso sí, apunta maneras. Y The Edge, como siempre, también.

Duffy, nueva diva del soul británico,conquista el verano con"Mercy"

Aimee Anne Duffy ya se ha convertido en la principal rival de la diva del retro-soul británico Amy Winehouse. Y es que Duffy posee algo de lo que Amy carece; un cuerpo escultural, melena rubio platino, cara angelical y una voz a lo Aretha Franklin que nada tiene que envidiar a la de la reina de los excesos.

Su voz nasal, ronca y seductora se la debe a su hermana, que le rompió la nariz cuando eran niñas, y su acento galés, que le confiere un tono sexy que ella sabe explotar muy bien. No es de extrañar que Bon Jovi, con quien comparte discográfica, haya versionado uno de sus temas ante más de 70.000 personas. Vega's mother, Pat Vega, is a computer systems analyst of German-Swedish heritage. Her father, Richard Peck, is of Scottish-English-Irish extraction and works in graphics. Her stepfather, Ed Vega, is a writer and teacher from Puerto Rico. Born in 1936.

When Vega was two and a half, the family moved to New York City. She grew up in Spanish Harlem and the Upper West Side.[2] At the age of nine she began to write poems; she wrote her first song at age fourteen. While majoring in English literature at Barnard College, she performed in small venues in Greenwich Village, where she was a regular contributor to Jack Hardy's Monday night songwriters group at the Cornelia Street Cafe. In 1984, she received a major label recording contract.

Vega's debut album, Suzanne Vega, was released in 1985 and was well received by critics in the U.S.; it reached platinum status in the United Kingdom. Produced by Lenny Kaye, Steve Addabbo and Steven Miller, the songs feature Vega's acoustic guitar in straightforward arrangements. Vega's writing often featured vignettes of characters and even inanimate objects, such as in Small Blue Thing. A video was released for the album's song Marlene on the Wall, which went into MTV and VH1's rotations. During this period Vega also wrote lyrics for two songs on Songs from Liquid Days by composer Philip Glass.

Her next effort, Solitude Standing (1987), garnered critical and commercial success including two hit singles: Tom's Diner, and Luka, which was an international success. Luka is written about, and from the point of view, of a battered child—at the time an uncommon subject for a pop hit. While continuing a focus on Vega's acoustic guitar, the music is more strongly pop-oriented and features fuller, more sensual arrangements. The a cappella Tom's Diner was later a hit again, remixed by two British dance producers under the name DNA, in 1991.

Tom's Diner
Vega's song Tom's Diner was used as the reference track in an early trial of the MP3 compression system (earning her the distinction of being "The Mother of the MP3"). Tom's Diner takes place in Tom's Restaurant at 112th Street and Broadway in New York City. Exterior shots of the same restaurant appear in the television sitcom Seinfeld as the eatery where Jerry, George, Elaine and Kramer hang out.[5]* On 3rd December 2007 a song sampling Tom's Diner was released by late rapper Tupac Shakur entitled Dopefiend's Diner. There have been multiple songs released featuring Tom's Diner; a complete list can be found here. Nick at Nite did a re-make of the song in the mid-90s for a commercial advertising "I Dream of Jeannie", in which the chorus is set to the theme from the show.

Luka was covered by The Lemonheads on their 1989 album Lick, shortly before the band was signed to Atlantic Records, and was a minor college-airplay hit. On a 1987 Swedish television special, Vega said this about the song Luka:

A few years ago, I used to see this group of children playing in front of my building, and there was one of them, whose name was Luka, who seemed a little bit distinctive from the other children. I always remembered his name, and I always remembered his face, and I didn't know much about him, but he just seemed set apart from these other children that I would see playing. And his character is what I based the song Luka on. In the song, the boy Luka is an abused child—in real life I don't think he was. I think he was just different.

Also, in an ASCAP interview, she responded to a question about Luka:

Interviewer: When you can touch so many people with songs like Luka, it must be pretty rewarding.
Vega: Yeah. It’s an amazing feeling. Especially since that particular song is a very special song. It’s a song about child abuse, so therefore it does touch a lot of people in a different way than if it were, say, a love song or some other kind of song.

Vega's third album, Days of Open Hand (1990) signified a change in style: the music became more experimental, and the lyrics expressed greater emotion.

In 1992 she released the album 99.9F° (ninety-nine point nine Fahrenheit degrees). It consists of an eclectic mixture of folk music, dance beats and industrial music.

Her fifth album, Nine Objects of Desire, was released in 1996. The music varies between a frugal, simple style and the industrial production of 99.9F°. This album contains Caramel, featured in the movie The Truth About Cats & Dogs and, later, the trailer for the movie Closer. A song not included on that album, Woman on the Tier, was featured on the soundtrack of the movie Dead Man Walking.

In 1997 she took a singing part on the concept album Heaven and Hell, a musical interpretation of the Seven deadly sins by her colleague Joe Jackson, with whom she had already collaborated in 1986 on Left of center from the Pretty in Pink soundtrack (with Vega singing and Jackson playing piano).

September 2001 saw the release of a new album, Songs In Red and Gray. Three songs deal with Vega's divorce from record producer Mitchell Froom, whom she married in 1995 and divorced in 1998.

At the memorial concert for her brother Timothy Vega in December 2002, she began as the long-term subject of a direct cinema documentary, Some Journey, by director Christopher Seufert of Mooncusser Films.

In 2003, the twenty-one song greatest hits compilation Retrospective: The Best of Suzanne Vega was released. (The UK version of Retrospective included an eight-song bonus CD as well as a DVD containing twelve songs.) In the same year she was invited by Grammy Award-winning jazz guitarist, Bill Frisell, to play at the Century of Song concerts at the famed RuhrTriennale in Germany.

In 2003, she hosted the American Public Media radio series American Mavericks, about 20th century American composers, which received the prestigious Peabody Award for Excellence in Broadcasting.

Vega has a daughter, Ruby Froom (born 8 July 1994). The band Soul Coughing's Ruby Vroom album was named after her, with Vega's approval, though she requested a slight change.

On 11 February 2006, Vega married Paul Mills, a lawyer and a poet. They originally met each other at Folk City on West 4th Street in 1981. In their own words, Mr. Mills proposed to Miss Vega in May 1983, and she accepted his proposal on Christmas Day 2005.

On 3 August 2006, Vega became the first major recording artist to perform live in the Internet-based virtual world, Second Life. The event was hosted by John Hockenberry of public radio's The Infinite Mind.

On 17 September 2006, she performed in Central Park, as part of a benefit concert for The Save Darfur Coalition. During the concert she highlighted her support for Amnesty International, of which she has been a member for nearly a decade.

In early October 2006 Vega took part in the Academia Film Olomouc (AFO) in Olomouc, the Czech Republic, the oldest festival of documentary films in Europe, in which she appeared as a main guest. She was invited there as the subject of the documentary film by director Christopher Seufert, that had a test screening at the festival. At the end of the festival she performed her classical songs, and added one brand new piece called New York Is a Woman.

Vega is also one of the interviewed persons in the book Everything Is Just a Bet which was published in Czech in October 2006. The book contains twelve interview transcriptions from the talk show called Stage Talks that regularly runs in the Svandovo Theatre in Prague. Vega introduced the book to the audience of the Svandovo Theatre, and together with some other Czech celebrities gave a signing session.

She signed with Blue Note Records in the spring of 2006, and released Beauty & Crime on 17 July 2007. The album was produced by Jimmy Hogarth, which won a Grammy for Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical. She was dropped by Blue Note two years later.[citation needed]

In 2007, Suzanne Vega, following the lead of numerous other mainstream artists released her track Pornographer's Dream as podsafe. The song spent two weeks at during 2007 and finished as the hit of the year on the PMC Top10's annual countdown.

El malogrado cantante de Nirvana sigue dando qué hablar. Los medios internacionales se han hecho eco hoy de una noticia sorprendente: las cenizas del músico, que permanecían en casa de su mujer, Courtney Love, han sido sustraídas junto a varios vestidos y joyas por valor de varios miles de euros. “No puedo creer que alguien me haya quitado las cenizas de Kurt. Estoy muy disgustada y con ganas de suicidarme. Si no me las devuelven, no sé qué haré. Solía llevarlas siempre a todas partes para sentir que Kurt seguía estando conmigo. Ahora siento que lo he perdido otra vez”, ha declarado Love al diario News of the World.

La viuda de Kurt tenía en su poder un tercio de las cenizas del músico. Tras su suicidio y posterior cremación, otro tercio se esparció en un monasterio de Budismo Tibetano en Ithaca (Nueva York), mientras que el último fue arrojado al río Wishkah, en el estado de Washington.

La muerte de Kurt Cobain siempre fue un filón para los amantes de la conspiranoia musical. Lo cierto es que su suicidio estuvo rodeado de circunstancias bastante extrañas que quedaron por explicar. Muchas de esas dudas se recogieron en el documental de Nick Broomfield ¿Quién mató a Kurt Cobain?. En uno de los testimonios recogidos por Broomfield, Eldon Hoke, amante de Courtney, afirmaba que la esposa de Cobain le ofreció 50 mil dólares para matar a Kurt. Una semana después de que el director filmase esas palabras, Hoke fue encontrado muerto en California sobre las vías del tren.

El documental contaba además con otros protagonistas que arrojaban dudas sobre la muerte de Cobain, entre otros el del propio padre de Love, que afirmaba estar "convencido de que Courtney tuvo algo que ver con la muerte de Kurt, o que al menos sabe quién lo hizo". Courtney presionó para que la película no se estrenase en el festival de Sundance, y acabó saliéndose con la suya. Pese a ello, el filme acabó llegando a las salas y cosechando un éxito considerable.

No es extraño que la figura de Courtney Love despierte dudas con respecto a la muerte de Cobain. Roxy Music is an English art rock group founded in the early 1970s by art school graduate Bryan Ferry (vocals and keyboards). The other members are Phil Manzanera (guitars), Andy Mackay (saxophone and oboe) and Paul Thompson (drums and percussion). Former members are Brian Eno (synthesizer and "treatments"), and Eno's replacement Eddie Jobson (synthesizer and violin). Extant from 1971 through 1983, they reunited for a concert tour in 2001, and have announced that they are recording a new album for a yet-to-be-confirmed release date.

Roxy Music attained mainstream popular and critical success in the UK and Europe through the 1970s and early 1980s, beginning with their chart-topping debut album, Roxy Music in 1972.[1]. The band proved to be a significant influence on the early English punk movement, as well as providing a model for many New Wave acts and the subsequent New Romantic and experimental electronic groups of the early 1980s. Ferry and co-founding member Brian Eno have also had broadly influential solo careers, and Eno in particular has emerged one of the most significant record producers of the late 20th century, with credits including landmark albums by Devo, Talking Heads and U2.

Formation and first two albums (1970–73)
In November 1970, ceramics teacher and aspiring rock musician Bryan Ferry advertised for a keyboard player to collaborate with him and Graham Simpson, a bass player he knew from his art college band, The Gas Board. Earlier in 1970 Ferry had auditioned as lead singer for King Crimson (who were seeking a replacement for departed vocalist Greg Lake) and although Robert Fripp and Pete Sinfield decided that Ferry's voice was unsuitable for King Crimson's material, they were impressed with his talent and they subsequently helped the fledgling Roxy Music to obtain a contract with E.G. Records.

Andy MacKay replied to Ferry's advertisement, not as a keyboard player but as a saxophonist and oboist; however, he did possess a VCS3 synthesiser. Andy met Brian Eno during university days, as both were interested in avant-garde and electronic music. It was some time later that they met again; although Eno was a self-confessed non-musician, he could operate a synthesizer and owned a Revox reel-to-reel tape machine, so Mackay convinced him to join the band as a technical adviser. Before long Eno was a performing member of the group. After Dexter Lloyd, a classically-trained timpanist, left the band an ad was placed in Melody Maker magazine saying wonder drummer wanted for an avante rock group.[2] Paul Thompson responded to the ad and joined the line-up in June 1971. Soon after, guitarist Phil Manzanera replaced former Nice guitarist David O'List, making Roxy Music a six-piece band. With this line-up, their first album Roxy Music was recorded in March and released in June 1972 in Island Records, receiving good reviews and reached number one on the UK charts in late 1972.[1] The group's name was partly an homage to the titles of old cinemas and dance halls, and partly a pun on the word 'rock'. Ferry had first named the band Roxy, but learning of an American band with the same name prompted the alteration of the name.

Simpson was sacked and replaced with Rik Kenton.

To garner more attention to their album, Roxy Music decided to record and release a single. Their debut single was "Virginia Plain", which reached #4 in the British charts. The band's eclectic visual image, captured in their debut performance on the BBC's Top of the Pops, became a cornerstone for the glam trend in the UK; the TOTP video of "Virginia Plain" was later parodied by the British comedy series Big Train. The single sparked a renewed interest in the album.

Soon after "Virginia Plain", Rik Kenton departed the band.

The next album, For Your Pleasure (recorded with guest bass player John Porter) was released in March 1973. It marked the beginning of the band's long, successful collaboration with producer Chris Thomas and recording engineer Bill Price, who worked on all of the group's classic albums and singles in the 1970s. The album was promoted with the non-album single "Pyjamarama", but no album track was released as a single. At the time, Ferry was dating French model Amanda Lear, who was photographed with a black jaguar for the cover of For Your Pleasure (Ferry appears on the back cover as a dapper driver standing in front of a limousine).

Stranded, Country Life, Siren, and solo projects (1974–77)
Soon after recording For Your Pleasure, Brian Eno left Roxy Music amidst increasing differences with Ferry over the direction and running of the group (and, as some have contended, over a personal feud that developed between the two).[3] The other members of the band are reported to have shared some of Eno's concerns about Ferry's dominance, but they elected to remain in the group. The band would never again settle on a permanent bass player. John Gustafson, John Wetton, Gary Tibbs and Alan Spenner among others would fill the revolving role.

Eno was replaced by 19-year-old multi-instrumentalist Eddie Jobson, formerly of progressive rockers Curved Air, who played both keyboards and electric violin. Although some fans lamented the loss of the experimental attitude and camp aesthetic that Eno had brought to the band, the classically-trained Jobson was a dynamic and accomplished musician. His arrival reinvigorated the group, with his keyboard expertise freeing Ferry from his keyboard duties on stage, as well as lending greater refinement to the group's studio recordings. His dazzling electric violin skills added an exciting new dimension to the band's sound, as showcased on the song "Out of the Blue". Eno himself later acknowledged the quality of the two albums that followed his departure, Stranded (1973) and Country Life (1974), and they are widely regarded as being among the most original and consistent British rock albums of the period. Rolling Stone referred to the albums as marking "the zenith of contemporary British art rock".[4] The songs on these albums also cemented Ferry's persona as the epitome of the suave, jaded Euro-sophisticate. Although this persona undoubtedly began as a deliberately ironic device, during the mid-1970s it seemed to merge with Ferry's real life, as the working-class miner's son from the north of England became an international rock star, an icon of male style who had love affairs with many beautiful women, among them Playboy playmate Marilyn Cole (who appeared on the cover of the Stranded album) and fashion models Amanda Lear (who would later date David Bowie) and Jerry Hall (who later became the common law wife of Mick Jagger).

On the first two Roxy albums, all songs were written solely by Bryan Ferry. Beginning with Stranded, Mackay and Manzanera began to co-write some material. Gradually, their songwriting and musicianship became more integrated into the band's sound, although Ferry remained the dominant songwriter; throughout their career, all but one of Roxy's singles were written either wholly or jointly by Ferry. Stranded was released in November 1973, and produced the top-10 single "Street Life".

The fourth album, Country Life, was released in 1974, and was the first Roxy Music album to enter the U.S. Top 40, albeit at #37. Country Life was met with widespread critical acclaim, with Rolling Stone referring to it "as if Ferry ran a cabaret for psychotics, featuring chanteurs in a state of shock".[4] Their fifth album, Siren, contained their only U.S. hit, "Love is the Drug". (Ferry said the song came to him while kicking the leaves during a walk through Hyde Park.) At this time Ferry was involved in a high profile relationship with Texas-born supermodel Jerry Hall. Hall had a small impact on the group, being the subject of the Roxy song "Prairie Rose" (from Country Life), a song that directly inspired the Talking Heads song "The Big Country". "Prairie Rose" was later covered by the Scottish rock group Big Country as a B-side to their single "Where The Rose is Sown" in 1984. Hall is also featured on the cover of the Siren LP and in the video for Ferry's 1976 international solo hit, a cover of Wilbert Harrison's "Let's Stick Together".

Following the concert tours in support of Siren in 1976, Roxy Music disbanded. During this time Ferry released two solo records on which Manzanera and Thompson performed, and Manzanera reunited with Eno on the critically acclaimed one-off 801 Live album.

Final albums and break-up (1978–83)
Roxy Music reunited in 1978 to record a new album, Manifesto, but with a reshuffled line-up. Jobson was not present (reportedly not contacted for the reunion) as Ferry decided to perform keyboards himself. After the tour and prior to the recording of the next album, Flesh + Blood, Thompson broke his thumb in a motorcycle mishap and took a leave from the band (and soon after left permanently). The three remaining members were supplemented by a variety of session players over the next few years, including Andy Newmark, Neil Hubbard and Alan Spenner.

The changed line-up reflected a distinct change in Roxy's musical approach. Gone were the jagged and unpredictable elements of the group's sound, giving way to smoother (some would say blander) musical arrangements. Rolling Stone panned Manifesto—"Roxy Music has not gone disco. Roxy Music has not particularly gone anywhere else either"[5]—as well as Flesh + Blood ("such a shockingly bad Roxy Music record that it provokes a certain fascination").[6] Later, with more sombre and carefully-sculpted soundscapes, the band's eighth—and, until their 21st-century reunion, final—album, Avalon (1982), was a major commercial success and restored the group's critical reputation (Rolling Stone: "Avalon takes a long time to kick in, but it finally does, and it's a good one.") The trio toured extensively until 1983, when Bryan Ferry dissolved the band and band members devoted themselves full time to solo careers (see below).

Reunion and new album (2001–present)
Ferry, Manzanera, Mackay, and Thompson re-formed in 2001 to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the band and toured extensively. A festival appearance in Portugal and a short tour of the USA followed in 2003. Absent was Brian Eno, who criticized the motives of the band's reunion, saying, "I just don't like the idea. It leaves a bad taste."[7] Later Eno remarked that his comment had been taken out of context. Manzanera and Thompson recorded and toured with Ferry on his 2002 album Frantic. Eno also contributed to Frantic on the track "I Thought".

In 2004, Rolling Stone magazine ranked the group #98 on its list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time.

Roxy Music returned to the stage for a live performance at the 2005 Isle of Wight Festival on 11 June 2005, their first UK concert since the 2001-2002 world tour. On 2 July 2005, the band played "Jealous Guy", "Do the Strand" and "Love is the Drug" at the Berlin contribution to Live8; only "Do the Strand" was available on the DVD.

In March 2005 it was announced on Phil Manzanera's official site[9] that the band, including Brian Eno, had decided to record an album of new material. The project would mark the first time Eno worked with Roxy Music since 1973's For Your Pleasure. After a number of denials that he would be involved with any Roxy Music reunion, on 19 May 2006 Eno revealed that he had contributed two songs to the new album as well as playing keyboards on other tracks. He did, however, rule out touring with the band.[10] The record will also be the first since Manifesto on which original drummer Paul Thompson performs.

The film featured legendary football referee Pierluigi Collina, whose sartorial elegance somewhat echoed Ferry's. The remix was immediately popular across the continent and the UK, bringing Roxy to a new generation of viewers and fans.

In July 2006, the band toured Europe. They concentrated mostly on places they've never visited before, visiting for a first time Serbia and Republic of Macedonia. Roxy Music's second drummer Andy Newmark handled the tour as Thompson withdrew due to health issues.

In a March 2007 interview with the Western Daily Press, Ferry confirmed that although the next Roxy Music album is definitely in the making it will not see light for another "year and a half", as Ferry had just released and toured behind his twelfth studio album, Dylanesque, consisting of Bob Dylan covers.

In June 2007 the band hired Liverpool based design agency to develop their new website supporting their new album. Early in the year, Phil Manzanera revealed that the band are planning to sign a record contract. In an October 2007 interview, Ferry said that the album would include a collaboration with Scissor Sisters.

The Doobie Brothers is an American rock group. They have sold over 22 million albums in the United States from the 1970s to the present.
The Doobie Brothers were inducted into The Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2004.

In 1969, singer, guitarist and songwriter Tom Johnston and drummer John Hartman formed the nucleus of what would become The Doobie Brothers. Skip Spence of Moby Grape (and formerly of Jefferson Airplane) introduced them to one another after Hartman arrived in California determined to meet Spence and join an aborted Grape reunion. New bandmates Johnston and Hartman called their fledgling group Pud and experimented with different lineups and styles as they performed in and around San Jose. They were mostly a power trio (along with bassist Greg Murphy) but briefly worked with a horn section. In 1970, they teamed up with bass player Dave Shogren and singer, guitarist and songwriter Patrick Simmons. Simmons, who had belonged to several area groups and also performed as a solo artist, was already an accomplished fingerstyle player whose approach to the instrument complemented Johnston's rhythmic R&B strumming. In a recent interview, Tom Johnston attributed the band's eventual name to friend and housemate Keith "Dyno" Rosen, who noted the guys' fondness for "doobies." They considered the new moniker an improvement over Pud.[citation needed]

The Doobie Brothers honed their chops by performing live all over Northern California in 1970. They attracted a particularly strong following among local chapters of the Hells Angels and scored a recurring gig at one of the bikers' favorite venues, the rustic Chateau Liberte' in the Santa Cruz Mountains. An energetic set of demos (some of which were briefly released on Pickwick Records in 1980 under the title Introducing the Doobie Brothers), showcased fuzz-toned dual lead electric guitars, three-part harmonies and Hartman's frenetic drumming and earned the rock group a contract at Warner Bros. Records.

At this point in their history, the band's image reflected that of their biggest fans - leather jackets and motorcycles. However, the group's 1971 self-titled debut album departed significantly from that image and their live sound of the period. The album, which failed to chart, emphasized acoustic guitars and frequently reflected country influences. The bouncy lead-off song "Nobody," the band's first single, has surfaced in their live set several times over the ensuing decades and even appears on the 2004 DVD Live at Wolf Trap.

The following year's second album, Toulouse Street (which spawned the hits, and classic rock staples, "Listen To The Music" and "Jesus Is Just Alright"), brought the band their breakthrough success. In collaboration with manager Bruce Cohn, producer Ted Templeman and engineer Donn Landee, the band put forward a more polished and eclectic set of songs. They also made necessary improvements to the line-up. First, they replaced Shogren with singer, songwriter and bass guitarist Tiran Porter. Second, they supplemented Hartman's drumming with that of Navy veteran Michael Hossack. Porter and Hossack were both stalwarts of the northern California music scene. Pianist Bill Payne of Little Feat contributed keyboards for the first time (He added keys to their studio recordings for many years thereafter and once briefly joined their touring band in early 1974). With an improved rhythm section and the songwriting of Johnston and Simmons, the Doobies' trademark sound - an amalgam of R&B, country, bluegrass, heavy metal and rock and roll - emerged fully formed.

A string of hits followed, including Johnston's "Long Train Runnin'" and "China Grove," from the 1973 album The Captain and Me. Other noteworthy songs on the album were Simmons' country-ish ode "South City Midnight Lady" and the explosive, hard rocking raveup, "Without You," for which the entire band received songwriting credit. Onstage, the latter song would stretch into a 15-minute jam with additional lyrics ad-libbed by Johnston. A 1973 appearance on the debut show of Don Kirshner's Rock Concert featured one such epic performance of the tune.

In the midst of recording sessions for their next album, 1974's What Were Once Vices Are Now Habits, Hossack abruptly departed the band citing burnout from constant touring. Drummer, songwriter and vocalist Keith Knudsen (from the band Bonaroo) was recruited promptly and left with the Doobies on a major tour within days of joining in September of 1973 (Hossack then joined Bonaroo). Both Hossack's drums and Knudsen's voice are heard on Vices.

In 1974, Steely Dan co-lead guitarist Jeff "Skunk" Baxter learned that his band was retiring from the road and that Donald Fagen and Walter Becker intended to work almost exclusively with session players in the future. In need of a steady gig, he segued into the Doobie Brothers as third lead guitarist in the middle of their current tour. He had previously worked with the band in the studio, adding pedal steel guitar to both Captain ("South City Midnight Lady") and Vices ("Black Water," "Tell Me What You Want") and had already been playing with the band as a "special guest" on the '74 tour.

Vices included the band's first #1 single: Simmons' signature tune "Black Water." "Black Water," which featured the memorable refrain, "I'd like to hear some funky Dixieland, pretty mama come and take me by the hand," climbed to the top of the charts in 1975 and eventually propelled the album to multi-platinum status. Johnston's lyrical "Another Park, Another Sunday" (as a single, "Black Water" originally appeared as its B-side) and his horn-driven funk song "Eyes of Silver" had also charted at #32 & #52, respectively, the previous year.

During this period and for several subsequent tours, the Doobies were often supported on-stage by Stax Records legends The Memphis Horns. Live recordings with the horn section have aired on radio on the King Biscuit Flower Hour, though none has been officially released. They also appeared as session players on multiple Doobies albums

Michael McDonald years
By the end of 1974, Johnston's health was suffering from the rigors of the road. He was absent when the band joined the Beach Boys, Chicago and Olivia Newton-John on "Dick Clark's Rockin' New Year's Eve" that December. By then, the western-themed Stampede had been completed for release in 1975. It featured yet another hit single, Johnston's cover of the Holland-Dozier-Holland-written Motown hit "Take Me in Your Arms" (originally sung by Kim Weston and also covered by Blood, Sweat, and Tears). The song included a distinctive Baxter guitar solo. Simmons contributed the atmospheric "I Cheat the Hangman," as well as "Neal's Fandango," an ode to Santa Cruz, Jack Kerouac and Neal Cassady. Ry Cooder added his slinky slide guitar to Johnston's cowboy song, "Rainy Day Crossroad Blues".

By the start of the Spring 1975 promotional tour for Stampede, Johnston's condition was so precarious that he required emergency hospitalization for a bleeding ulcer. With Johnston convalescing and the tour already underway, Baxter proposed recruiting a fellow Steely Dan alum to fill the hole: singer, songwriter and keyboardist Michael McDonald. Simmons, Knudsen, Porter and McDonald divvied up and sang Johnston's parts on tour while Simmons and Baxter shared lead guitar chores.

Under contract to release another album in 1976, the Doobies were at a crossroads. Their primary songwriter and singer remained unavailable, so they turned to McDonald and Porter for material to supplement that of Simmons. The resulting LP, Takin' It to the Streets, debuted a radical change in their sound. Electric guitar-based rock and roll gave way to blue-eyed soul and soft rock emphasizing keyboards and horns. Baxter contributed jazz-inflected guitar stylings reminiscent of Steely Dan. Above all, McDonald's voice became the band's new signature sound. Takin' It featured McDonald's title track and "It Keeps You Runnin'," both hits ("It Keeps You Runnin'" had been co-written by Carly Simon and also appeared on her album Another Passenger). Bassist Porter wrote and sang a tribute to the absent Johnston, entitled "For Someone Special." A greatest hits compilation, Best of the Doobies, followed before year's end. (In 1996, the Recording Industry Association of America certified Best of the Doobies "Diamond" for sales in excess of ten million.)

Their new sound was further refined and McDonald's dominant role cemented with 1977's Livin' on the Fault Line. It featured a cover of the Motown classic "Little Darlin' (I Need You)," "Echoes Of Love" (a Simmons composition written for, but not recorded by Al Green), and "You Belong To Me" (again co-written by McDonald and Carly Simon, who had a hit with her own version of the tune). To help promote Fault Line, the band performed live on the PBS show Soundstage and appeared as themselves in a two-part episode of the television comedy What's Happening!!.

Both Streets and Fault Line reflected Tom Johnston's diminished role in the group following his illness. Restored to fitness and briefly back in the fold, he contributed one original song to Streets and also added a vocal cameo to Simmons' tune "Wheels of Fortune." He also made live appearances with the band in 1976 (documented in a concert filmed that year at the Winterland in San Francisco, excerpts from which appear occasionally on VH1 Classic), but was sidelined once again in the fall due to exhaustion. None of Johnston's songs appeared on Fault Line, although he received credit for guitars and vocals and was pictured on the album sleeve. Finally, before the Fault Line tour began, Johnston departed the band that he co-founded for a solo career that eventually yielded two modestly successful Warner Bros. albums: Everything You've Heard is True (1979) and Still Feels Good (1981).

During the period of transition, the band also elevated former roadie Bobby LaKind to onstage vocalist and percussionist. In the studio, LaKind first contributed percussion to Streets. (He had joined the road crew in 1974.)

After almost a decade on the road, and with seven albums under their belts, the Doobies' career unexpectedly soared with the success of their next album, 1978's Minute by Minute. It spent five weeks at the top of the music charts and dominated several radio formats for the better part of two years. McDonald's song "What a Fool Believes," written with Kenny Loggins, was the band's second #1 single and earned the songwriting duo a Grammy Award for Record of the Year. The breezy, McDonald-penned title song received the Grammy for Pop Vocal Performance by a Group and the album was honored with an Album of the Year nod. Among the other memorable songs on the album were "Here to Love You," "Dependin' On You" (co-written by McDonald and Simmons), "Steamer Lane Breakdown" (a Simmons bluegrass instrumental) and McDonald's "How Do the Fools Survive?" (which featured a lengthy guitar coda improvised by Baxter in a single take, according to a 1980 interview in Guitar Player Magazine). Nicolette Larson (whose best-known hit was "Lotta Love") and departed former bandleader Johnston contributed guest vocals on the album.

The triumph of Minute by Minute was bittersweet, however, because it coincided with the near-dissolution of the band. The pressure of touring while recording and releasing an album each year had worn the members down. Jeff Baxter and Michael McDonald had been in the midst of a creative conflict for some time. McDonald desired a simple, polished rock/R&B sound while Baxter insisted on embellishing guitar parts. (Both McDonald and Baxter elaborated on the matter in the documentary series Behind the Music, which aired on VH1 in February 2001.) Just as Minute by Minute's monumental success had become apparent, founding drummer Hartman, longtime guitarist Baxter and LaKind exited through the revolving door. A two-song set on the January 27th, 1979 broadcast of Saturday Night Live (with guest host Michael Palin ) marked the final television appearance of this lineup, and a brief tour of Japan marked the last live performances of the band in its middle-period configuration. (Hartman subsequently joined Johnston's touring band in time to tape an appearance on Soundstage.)

With the surprise smash album embedded in the charts and more money to be earned on the road, the remaining Doobies (Simmons, Knudsen, McDonald and Porter) decided to forge ahead. In 1979, Hartman was replaced by ace session drummer Chet McCracken, and Baxter by multi-instrumental string player John McFee (late of Huey Lewis' early band Clover); Cornelius Bumpus was also recruited to add vocals, keyboards and saxophone to the line-up. This line-up toured throughout 1979, including stops at Madison Square Garden and New York City's Central Park for the No Nukes benefit shows with like-minded artists such as Bonnie Raitt, Crosby, Stills & Nash, James Taylor, Carly Simon, Jackson Browne, Bruce Springsteen and John Hall.

1980 marked the return of LaKind to the lineup as a full member and the Doobies released their ninth studio album, entitled One Step Closer. The LP featured the hit title track and the Top Ten smash "Real Love" (not to be confused with the John Lennon composition), but did not dominate the charts and the radio as Minute by Minute had two years earlier. Long frustrated with the realities of relentless touring and yearning for a stable home life, Porter left the band after the recording of Closer. Renowned session bassist Willie Weeks stepped in and the Doobies continued touring throughout 1980 and 1981. (Post-Doobies, Weeks has performed with the Gregg Allman Band, Eric Clapton and many others.)

By the end of 1981, even Simmons had resigned from the band. Now faced with the prospect of calling themselves "The Doobie Brothers" with no remaining original members, the group elected instead to disband. The reluctant Simmons, already hard at work on his first solo album, was drafted for a 1982 farewell tour on the promise that this truly would be the end. At their last concert at the Greek Theater in Berkeley, they were joined onstage by founder Tom Johnston for what was presumed to be the final rendition of his staple, "China Grove." Former members Porter, Hossack and Hartman subsequently took the stage for an extended version of "Listen to the Music." Knudsen sang while Simmons, Johnston and McFee traded licks on guitar. Of all the members through the years, only Baxter and Shogren were absent when the group took its "final" bow. A live album, Farewell Tour, followed in 1983.

Reunion years and beyond
The Doobies hibernated for the next five years with various members getting together in different configurations for annual Christmas season performances for the patients and staff at the Stanford Children's Hospital in the Bay area. Simmons released a fine but commercially disappointing solo album, Arcade, in 1983. During the mid-80s, Johnston toured U.S. clubs with a band called Border Patrol, which did not release any recordings. Hossack and (briefly) Simmons worked with the group. Knudsen and McFee formed Southern Pacific and recorded four albums that found success in the country charts. (Former Creedence Clearwater Revival bassist Stu Cook would join the band in 1986 and former Pablo Cruise guitarist David Jenkins in 1988.) Out of print for decades, Arcade was reissued on compact disc in early 2007 by specialty label Wounded Bird Records, which is also the home of Southern Pacific's and Tom Johnston's catalogs. Post-Doobies, McDonald became established as a solo artist. His voice dominated adult contemporary radio throughout the eighties, though his star faded in the nineties. He has experienced a renaissance of popularity in the new century as an interpreter of Motown classics.

On a personal quest for a worthy cause, Knudsen had become active in Vietnam veterans' affairs. Early in 1987, he persuaded eleven of the Doobie alumni to join him for a concert to benefit veterans' causes. Answering the call were Tom Johnston, Pat Simmons, Jeff Baxter, John McFee, John Hartman, Michael Hossack, Chet McCracken, Michael McDonald, Cornelius Bumpus, Bobby LaKind and Tiran Porter. There were no surplus bass players as Weeks had other commitments and long-absent Shogren reportedly was not invited. They soon discovered that tickets were in great demand, so the one concert quickly evolved into a twelve city tour. This expanded lineup was able to perform selections from every album using a smorgasbord of instrumentation that they could not have previously duplicated onstage. Baxter and McFee played pedal steel and fiddle, respectively, during "Black Water" and "Steamer Lane Breakdown." "Without You" featured no fewer than four drummers and four lead guitarists. Producer Templeman, a musician in his own right, banged percussion and LaKind sometimes played Knudsen's trap set while the latter came to the front of the stage to join the chorus. The tour culminated (sans McDonald, McFee and Knudsen) at the glasnost-inspired July 4th "Peace Concert" in Moscow, with Bonnie Raitt , James Taylor and Santana sharing the bill. Excerpts appearing later that year on the Showtime cable network included a performance of "China Grove."

The successful reunion sparked discussions about reconstituting the band on a permanent basis. They eventually decided to replicate the Toulouse Street/Captain and Me incarnation, settling on a line-up featuring Johnston, Simmons, Hartman, Porter and Hossack plus more recent addition LaKind and released Cycles on Capitol Records in 1989. It featured a Top Ten single, "The Doctor," which showcased Johnston's unmistakable voice and soaring lead guitar, and appeared calculated to remind listeners of the band's pre-McDonald triumphs. The song is very similar to "China Grove" and the connection is further enhanced by guest Bill Payne's tinkling piano. Cycles was certified gold. Bumpus also participated on the 1989 tour, adding his distinctive voice, keyboards, saxophone and flute to the proceedings. His presence bridged the gap between the current band and the McDonald era; he sang lead vocals on the song "One Step Closer" (as he originally had on the 1980 album) while Simmons took McDonald's part. The group was further augmented on the 1989 tour by Dale Ockerman (keyboards, guitar, backing vocals), Richard Bryant (vocals, percussion) and Jimi Fox (percussion, backing vocals). Due to illness, LaKind stepped down before the tour.

The success of Cycles led to the release of 1991's Brotherhood, also on Capitol. The group members grew their hair back out, donned denim and leather, and attempted to revive their biker image of 1970. In spite of the makeover and strong material led by Simmons' now trademark "Dangerous" (featured in the Brian Bosworth film vehicle, Stone Cold), Brotherhood was unsuccessful. The accompanying tour (with the 1989 lineup sans Bumpus) was ranked among the ten least profitable tours of the disappointing 1991 summer season by the North American Concert Promoters Association, according to an article published in Billboard Magazine on December 14th of that year. The 1987 Doobie alumni band reunited on October 17th and 19th, 1992 at the Concord Pavillion in Concord, California to perform benefit shows for LaKind's children. Noticeably frail, LaKind, who was terminally ill with cancer, nevertheless joined the group on percussion for a few numbers. The concerts were recorded and subsequently broadcast on the Superstars in Concert radio series accompanied by a plea for contributions to the LaKind family fund. LaKind passed away on Christmas Eve the same year.

A brief period of hiatus followed during which Simmons collaborated with bassist and songwriter John Cowan (ex-New Grass Revival), Rusty Young (of Poco) and Bill Lloyd (of Foster & Lloyd) on an unreleased project called Four Wheel Drive. When the band emerged yet again in 1993, Hartman and Porter were gone for good but former members Keith Knudsen and John McFee had rejoined on a full-time basis. Joined by Ockerman, Bumpus and former member Willie Weeks, the group toured with Four Wheel Drive as the opening act. After Weeks left the tour to resume his session work, Cowan played bass for both bands. Bumpus also left (to join the reunited Steely Dan), giving way to saxophonist, keyboardist and harmonica player Danny Hull. Alum Chet McCracken temporarily filled in for an injured Hossack in July 1993. The 1993 and 1994 tours included co-headlining appearances with Foreigner.

Tiran Porter still performs in and around northern California, occasionally with Moby Grape and regularly with Stormin' Norman and the Cyclones and the Beatles tribute band the Santa Cruz White Album Ensemble. His only solo album, the self-produced Playing to an Empty House, has become a collector's item.

With renewed energy, the band began to experiment with different arrangements of several tunes. They even sampled McDonald's songbook from time to time, eventually restoring "Takin' it to the Streets" to the set on a semi-permanent basis with Simmons and new bassist Skylark (who joined in 1995) subbing for McDonald on vocals.

The band has toured incessantly since 1993. In 1995, they reunited with McDonald for a brief co-headlining tour with the Steve Miller Band. The "Dreams Come True" tour featured all three primary songwriters and singers and reflected all phases of the band's career. Cornelius Bumpus joined the 1995 tour, with Chet McCracken replacing the absent Knudsen and Bernie Chiaravalle sitting in for John McFee. A 1996 double live album, Rockin' Down the Highway: The Wildlife Concert, featured guest star McDonald on three of his signature tunes. McDonald remains an occasional "special guest" and has joined the group for benefits, private corporate shows and parties (such as the wedding reception of Liza Minnelli and David Gest), as well. Baxter has also sat in with the band during concerts, and the band have stated that they have an "open door" policy for guest appearances by former members.

Keyboardist Guy Allison (ex-Moody Blues and Air Supply) replaced Dale Ockerman in 1996. Marc Russo (ex-Yellow Jackets) joined in early 1998, replacing Danny Hull. A serious motorbike mishap sidelined Hossack from mid-2001 to 2002. Drummer/percussionist M. B. Gordy was recruited to play drums during Hossack's absence, and remained on percussion until 2005. Ed Wynne substituted for Russo briefly in 2002.

In the late 1990s, the current band was forced to obtain an injunction preventing confusing or misleading uses of the "Doobie Brothers" moniker in advertisements promoting a tribute band featuring former members McCracken, Bumpus and Shogren accompanied by several lesser known musicians. Unfortunately, this unpleasant episode appeared to have burned bridges between the band and the aforementioned former members (of whom only McCracken survives today).

In 1999, Rhino Records released the group's first box set, entitled Long Train Runnin': 1970-2000. The box featured remastered tunes from the band's entire catalog, a new studio recording of the live concert staple "Little Bitty Pretty One," and an entire disc of previously unreleased studio outtakes and live recordings. Rhino's 2000 release, Sibling Rivalry, offered the band's first new studio album in nine years. The material, which reflected significant contributions from both Knudsen and McFee, ranged from hard rock and hip-hop to jazz and adult contemporary. The album sold poorly, reflecting the declining sales throughout the adult-oriented rock musical scene. The band and its supporters felt it did not find the large audience it deserved.

To date, four members of the Doobies family are deceased: percussionist LaKind in 1992 following his lengthy struggle with cancer; original bassist Shogren of unreported causes in 1999; and Bumpus of a heart attack in 2004 while in the air on route to California for a solo tour. Drummer and activist Keith Knudsen died in 2005 of cancer and chronic pneumonia. Former Vertical Horizon drummer Ed Toth was selected to fill Knudsen's drum seat as the band soldiered on.

Johnston was forced to miss several shows in the summer of 2007 following an operation for a throat ailment. Upon his return, he received vocal assistance from Simmons and McFee on certain tunes that he had traditionally sung in their entirety. The Doobies have announced plans to reunite with long-time producer Ted Templeman for a new album in 2008, and to release a DVD compilation of live performances and television appearances from throughout the group's long career.

Given the history of turnover, the current version of the band has proven to be remarkably stable in its core membership since 1993. It features one-half of the four original members - Johnston (1970-1977, 1987-present) and ever-present Simmons (1970-present, with only a brief hiatus in late 1981-early 1982) - plus veteran drummer Hossack (1971-1973, 1987-present) and longtime guitarist McFee (1979-1982, 1987, 1992-present). They are supported by Skylark on bass and vocals (joined 1995, replacing Cowan), keyboardist Guy Allison (joined 1996, replacing Dale Ockerman), and Marc Russo on saxophone (joined 1998, replacing Danny Hull). With Hossack, newest member Toth (joined 2005) keeps the trademark double-drummers driven sound going. The group continues to tour heavily and remains a popular concert draw. From 2005 through 2007 they headlined benefit concerts at manager Cohn's B.R. Cohn Winery in Glen Ellen (once again sharing the stage with "special guest" McDonald in 2006). They have maintained a continuous and active presence on the Internet through their official website since 1996.

The Doobie Brothers have been eligible for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame since 1996 but have yet to be nominated.

Bolton was born in 1953 to a Russian-Jewish family in New Haven, Connecticut. The youngest of three children, he received his first record label contract at the age of 15.

Bolton's hard rock band, Blackjack, once toured with heavy metal singer Ozzy Osbourne. He began recording as Michael Bolotin in 1975, after gaining his first major hit as a songwriter, co-writing "How Am I Supposed to Live Without You" for Laura Branigan, previously best-known for singing the disco-pop classic "Gloria". Narrowly missing the pop Top 10, Branigan took the song to number one on the Adult Contemporary charts for three weeks. The two sought to work with each other again, and their next of several associations was when Bolton co-wrote "I Found Someone" for Branigan in 1985. Her version was only a minor hit, but two years later, Cher resurrected the song, and with it her own singing career. Bolton co-wrote several other songs for both singers.

Bolton would achieve his greatest success in the late eighties and early nineties as a singer in the adult contemporary/easy listening genre. One of his first major hits was his 1987 interpretation of the Otis Redding classic, "(Sittin' On) the Dock of the Bay." Always interested in soul and Motown classics, Bolton's success with that song encouraged him to tackle the standard "Georgia On My Mind," with which he had another hit. Most of Bolton's recordings are original material, however, he has also written songs for such artists as Barbra Streisand, Kenny Rogers, Kenny G, Peabo Bryson and Patti LaBelle. Bolton's early songwriting collaborators included Doug James and Mark Mangold, and as his fame grew he began to cowrite with higher-profile writers such as BabyFace, Diane Warren, and Bob Dylan. As a singer, he has performed with Plácido Domingo, Luciano Pavarotti, José Carreras, Lucia Aliberti, Renée Fleming, Zucchero, Patti LaBelle, Céline Dion, Ray Charles, Percy Sledge, Wynonna Judd, and BB King.

Bolton's last charting single in the US was the 1997 hit "Go the Distance" (featured in the Walt Disney motion picture Hercules), which peaked at #24 on the Hot 100.

In March 2007, Bolton toured South Africa for the first time. He was the headline act at Jacaranda 94.2 FM's two day concert.

Bolton recorded the song "New York, New York" (also on his Bolton Swings Sinatra album), for an album which was recorded in five days, Over the Rainbow. This was for an episode of the TV series, Challenge Anneka. The proceeds from the album went to children's hospices across the UK.

Bolton performed a duet entitled "Il Mio Amico" with the Italian singer Anna Tatangelo at the Sanremo Music Festival 2008. The song was originally sung by Tatangelo alone, but the duet version contained English lyrics as well. It is a song about the difficulties of being a homosexual in Italy, written by Tatangelo's partner, Gigi D'Alessio.

Caravan are an English band from the Canterbury area, founded by former Wilde Flowers members David Sinclair, Richard Sinclair, Pye Hastings and Richard Coughlan.[1] Caravan rose to success over a period of several years from 1968 onwards into the 1970s as part of the Canterbury scene, blending psychedelic rock and jazz to create a distinctive sound like their contemporaries Soft Machine. Following the dissolution of their former band, Wilde Flowers, David Sinclair, Richard Sinclair, Pye Hastings and Richard Coughlan formed Caravan in 1968. The band became the first British act to sign for American record label, Verve, who subsequently released the band's debut LP, Caravan, later the same year. After this Verve closed their rock and pop division, causing Caravan to move to Decca Records for the release of If I Could Do It All Over Again, I'd Do It All Over You in 1970, from which the title track gained the band an appearance on Top Of The Pops, and then Deram (Decca's progressive subsidiary) for 1971's In the Land of Grey and Pink. After the third album's release David Sinclair chose to leave the group, to be replaced by Steve Miller. The change in keyboardist caused a change in musical direction, and the band's next album, Waterloo Lily, was distinctly more jazz influenced than earlier work. This caused some unrest for followers of the group[citation needed] and the band disintegrated soon after Waterloo Lily's release, leaving just Hastings and Coughlan. The duo recruited viola player Geoffrey Richardson, bassist Stu Evans and keyboardist Derek Austin and toured extensively. This line-up did not make any recordings before Evans was replaced by John Perry and Dave Sinclair rejoined the group in 1973. The resulting album For Girls Who Grow Plump in the Night was cited as a return to form and is now heralded as one of the group's finest moments.[citation needed] Perry left soon afterwards and was replaced by Mike Wedgwood.

A regular cult favourite,[citation needed] the band's chart performance in the UK and US was minimal, charting one album, Cunning Stunts at US#124. In the UK, Cunning Stunts (#50) and Blind Dog at St. Dunstan's (#53) were their only hits. A loyal following has ensured steady back catalogue sales and a lengthy live career for the band,[citation needed] who continue to this day featuring founder members Pye Hastings (guitar, vocals, songwriting) and Richard Coughlan (drums). Caravan's best-known recording is the 1971 set In the Land of Grey and Pink, their second album for Decca. 30 years after its release this album finally received a platinum disc for sales of over 100,000.[citation needed]

It has been said of that album that it "showed off a keen melodic sense, a subtly droll wit, and a seductively smooth mix of hard rock, folk, classical, and jazz, intermingled with elements of Tolkien-esque fantasy".[1] A fair summary of Caravan's late sixties to late seventies work. Prolific and inventive, the band appeared to have too many ideas to produce direct, radio-friendly singles. 21st century reissues of their albums featured lengthy tracks, previously unissued, demonstrating the huge amount of releasable material that had failed to make their 1970s albums.

The band were largely dormant in the eighties until a 1990 reunion, planned as a one-off for television, restarted their career. Latterly they have also achieved steady sales and a fan following with the support of the more eclectic corners of radio, like BBC Six Music's "Freak Zone" and the growing re-emergence of progressive rock.[citation needed] They released Unauthorised Breakfast Item album in 2003

Their early music included ambitious concept albums, but they are best known for their later hits including "Dreamer", "Goodbye Stranger", "Give a Little Bit" and "The Logical Song". Supertramp attained superstardom in the United States, Canada, and most of Europe. However, they were not quite as popular in the UK (where most of the band members are actually from). Nonetheless, the album, "Breakfast in America", was still a big hit, reaching number #3 on the UK charts while the album had two top 10 singles.

Backed by a Dutch millionaire named Stanley August Miesegaes, vocalist, pianist and ex-drummer Rick Davies (born Richard Davies, July 22, 1944 in Swindon, Wiltshire, England) used newspaper advertising in Melody Maker to recruit an early version of the band in August 1969, an effort which recruited vocalist/guitarist and keyboardist Roger Hodgson (born Charles Roger Pomfret Hodgson, March 21, 1950 in Portsmouth, Hampshire, England). Other members of this embryonic Supertramp group included Richard Palmer (guitar, balalaika, vocals) (born Richard Jeffrey Charles Palmer-James, 11 June 1947, in Bournemouth, Dorset) and Robert Millar (percussion, harmonica) (born 2 February 1950). Initially, Roger Hodgson sang and played bass guitar (and on the side, guitar, cello and flageolet). The band was called Daddy from August 1969 to early 1970, when the band became Supertramp, a name taken from W.H. Davies' book, The Autobiography of a Super-Tramp, published in 1908.

They were one of the first groups to be signed to the UK branch of A&M Records. The first album, Supertramp, was released in July 1970 in the UK only (it was first issued in the US in 1977). Although it was very interesting musically, it proved a commercial disappointment. However, they were able to earn a slot on the bill of the 1970 Isle of Wight Festival, which was headlined by the likes of The Doors, The Who, and Jimi Hendrix. Richard Palmer abruptly quit six months after the album's release. Robert Millar suffered a nervous breakdown shortly afterwards. For the next album, Indelibly Stamped, released in June 1971 (in both UK and US), Frank Farrell (bass) (born in 1947 in Birmingham, West Midlands), Kevin Currie (percussion) (born in Liverpool, Merseyside) and Dave Winthrop (flute and saxophone) (born 27 November 1948, in New Jersey, USA) replaced Millar and Palmer, while Roger Hodgson switched to guitar. "Indelibly Stamped" featured rocking Beatlesque tunes, with vocal harmonies similar to Simon and Garfunkel songs (Davies now serving as the band's second lead singer, alongside Hodgson, who suggested that the band should have two lead vocalists), more commercial approach and eye-catching cover artwork. Supertramp had established themselves as a "cult" band. Sales, however, failed to improve and sold even less than their debut. In early 1972, Miesegaes withdrew his support from the band after paying off debts. All members gradually quit except Hodgson and Davies.

(These two first albums were later reissued during Supertramp's popularity peak and have maintained a certain appeal with die-hard fans. The first album is melancholic and quieter and the songs are spread out more than they would be later on. Roger Hodgson once called it his favourite Supertramp album. The second album is their most traditionally rock album, and certainly their heaviest sound.)

Initial success and commercial breakthrough
In late 1972, after being persuaded to carry on, Davies and Hodgson went on an extensive search for replacements, which first brought aboard Dougie Thomson (born Douglas Campbell Thomson, March 24, 1951 in Rutherglen, Glasgow, Strathclyde, Scotland) (bass), who played with the band almost a year before auditions resumed to complete the line-up. In 1973, auditions restarted and brought in Bob Siebenberg (born Robert Layne Siebenberg, October 31, 1949 in Glendale, California, USA, drums, and credited for several years as Bob C. Benberg, the story goes, to stay under the radar of British Immigration), and John Helliwell (born John Anthony Helliwell, February 15, 1945 in Todmorden, Yorkshire, England) (saxophone, other woodwinds, occasional keyboards, backing vocals), joining original members Davies and Hodgson and the newly brought in Thomson, completing the line-up that would create the group's defining albums. Hodgson would also begin playing keyboards in the band in addition to guitar, usually acoustic and electric pianos on his own compositions. His inspirational piano method would become a staple in the band, as heard on "Dreamer," "The Logical Song," "Take the Long Way Home," and many others, and would earn him the nickname "hammerheads" in the band. The classic Supertramp keyboard is a Wurlitzer electric piano (model 200A) with its unmistakable bright sound and biting distortion when played hard.

Crime of the Century, released in September 1974, began the group's run of critical and commercial successes, hitting number four in Britain, supported by the iconic countercultural opening track School, and the top-10 single "Dreamer". Its B-side "Bloody Well Right" hit the US Top 40 in May 1975. Siebenberg would later opine that he thought the band hit its artistic peak on this, their third album, though their greatest commercial success would come later.

The band continued with Crisis? What Crisis? released in November 1975. It achieved good though not overwhelming commercial success. The following album, Even in the Quietest Moments, released in April 1977 spawned their hit single Give a Little Bit, and the FM radio staple Fool's Overture. During this period, the band eventually relocated to the United States and moved steadily from the progressive styles of their early albums towards a more song-oriented pop sound.

This trend reached its zenith on their most popular album, Breakfast in America in March 1979, which reached Number 3 in the UK and Number 1 in the United States and spawned four successful singles, The Logical Song, "Take the Long Way Home", "Goodbye Stranger" and Breakfast in America. The album has since sold over 18 million copies worldwide.

The run of successes was capped with 1980s Paris, a 2-LP live album, in which the band stated its goal of improving on the studio versions of their songs. Interestingly, instead of focusing on songs from the hugely successful Breakfast in America, it included nearly every song from Crime of the Century, another testament to the importance of that album in the group's development.

Later career
Hodgson and Davies' differing singing and songwriting styles provided these albums with an interesting counterpoint, contrasting Davies' determined blues-rockers and songs of broken relationships ("Another Man's Woman", "From Now On", "Goodbye Stranger") with Hodgson's wistful introspection ("Dreamer", "School", "Fool's Overture", "The Logical Song"), but Hodgson felt constrained by the arrangement and left the band after the tour for their next album, ...Famous Last Words... (1982) which contained the Top 20 hit "It's Raining Again" and the Top 40 hit "My Kind of Lady". There was much speculation behind the reasons why Roger Hodgson left Supertramp. In an interview in the 90's Hodgson stated that family was the main reason he left the band. He also went on to say that his wife at the time and Rick Davies' wife did not get along very well and it became a big conflict for the group. He said there were never any real personal or professional problems between him and Rick Davies as some people thought.

Having left the band in 1983, Hodgson began a solo career, his biggest hit "Had A Dream (Sleeping With the Enemy)" coming from his first solo album In the Eye of the Storm, in 1984.

The Davies-led Supertramp soldiered on, releasing Brother Where You Bound the same year. This included a Top 30 hit single, "Cannonball", along with the title track, a 16-minute exposition on Cold War themes highlighted by guitar solos from Pink Floyd's David Gilmour. The album reached #21 on the US charts. 1987's Free as a Bird included more straightforward Davies rockers, including "I'm Beggin' You", which reached Number 1 on the US dance charts, a curious accomplishment for an "art rock" band.

After 1987's tour, Thomson left the band due to a disagreement with Davies about the use of Hodgson-penned songs during live performances. One of the conditions of allowing Davies to continue with the name Supertramp was that no Hodgson songs would be performed. Hodgson was dismayed to attend a concert and find that the band was performing his songs such as "Take the Long Way Home" and "The Logical Song." These songs were usually sung by Crowded House's Mark Hart (Hodgson's replacement on stage), and the Scottish bass player was against this move. When Supertramp reunited in 1997, Thomson declined an invitation to return and eventually quit playing for good.

In 1993, Davies approached Hodgson in a failed attempt to bring him back into the band. In interviews published on his and other fan forums, Hodgson later claimed he had been more than willing to rejoin Supertramp, but only if Davies' wife, Susan, abstained from interfering in band affairs (an issue before Hodgson left). Sue Davies was in Artist Relations at A&M (welcoming the band and helping them settle) when Supertramp moved to Los Angeles in the mid-70s and, as the romance between Davies and her blossomed, she quit A&M and started managing the band. Having to deal with two Davieses instead of one increased Hodgson's frustrations and prompted his departure. Davies declined to exclude his wife from his professional affairs, and Hodgson never heard from him again.

In 1997, Davies re-formed Supertramp with former members Helliwell, Siebenberg and Hart, plus several new musicians. The result was Some Things Never Change, a polished effort which echoed the earlier Supertramp sound. Ironically, that same year saw the release of Rites of Passage, Roger Hodgson's first solo album since Hai Hai in 1987. Rites of Passage was a live album featuring both new works from Roger as well as three Supertramp songs ("Take the Long Way Home", "The Logical Song" and "Give a Little Bit").

In an ironic reversal two years later, the re-formed Supertramp released a live album, It Was The Best Of Times while Roger released a studio album. Open The Door. Another live album, Is Everybody Listening?, a recording of Supertramp at the Royal Albert Hall in 1975, was released in 2001.

Early 2002 saw the release of another album by Davies and Supertramp, Slow Motion (sold direct in North America). Another attempt to reunite the band, including Hodgson, fell apart in 2005.

Rick Davies has since left California and resides in Long Island (East Hampton).

In the past few years, Roger Hodgson has donated Give A Little Bit to raise funds for Tsunami Relief efforts and other causes. It's been used by the Red Cross, United Way, the Make a Wish Foundation, and The Oprah Winfrey show requested the use of Give A Little Bit as part of their ”Gift of Giving Back Program“. In the UK it was used during the "ITV Telethon".

2006 was a busy year for Roger Hodgson. Throughout the summer of 2006, he has been touring Europe (France, Belgium, Portugal, Denmark, Switzerland, and Germany), as well as the US (St. Paul, MN) and Canada (fall 2006) and his DVD "Take The Long Way Home – Live In Montreal" has gone Platinum and to the #1 spot in Canada, in its first 7 weeks of release.

He has also been asked to mentor Canadian Idol’s Top 7 contestants, alongside Dennis DeYoung (a founding member of the group Styx).

In March 2006, Roger Hodgson was honoured for his song Give A Little Bit at the 23rd Annual ASCAP awards in Los Angeles. The American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers gave the award in acknowledgment of the song being one of the 50 most played songs of 2005.

Roger Hodgson appeared solo at the Diana Memorial Concert at Wembley Stadium on 1st July 2007. The band were one of the late Princess of Wales' favourites.

In 2008, Supertramp's music will be featured in the film movie adaptation of Irvine Welsh's best-selling novel Ecstasy: Three Tales of Chemical Romance.

Tangerine Dream is a German electronic music group founded in 1967 by Edgar Froese. The band has undergone several personnel changes over the years, with Froese the only continuous member. Drummer and composer Klaus Schulze was a member of an early lineup, but the most stable version of the group during their influential mid-1970s period was as a keyboard trio with Froese, Christopher Franke, and Peter Baumann. Early in the 1980s, Johannes Schmoelling replaced Baumann, and this lineup, too, was stable and extremely productive.

Tangerine Dream's early "Pink Years" albums had a pivotal role in the development of Krautrock. Their "Virgin Years" and later albums became a defining influence in New Age music, although the band themselves dislike the term.

Although the group has released numerous studio and live recordings, a substantial number of their fans were introduced to Tangerine Dream by their film soundtracks, which numbers over sixty and includes Sorcerer, Thief, The Keep, Risky Business, Firestarter, Legend, Near Dark, and Miracle Mile.

Evangelos Odysseas Papathanassiou (Greek: Ευάγγελος Οδυσσέας Παπαθανασίου IPA: [evˈaɲɟelos oðiˈseas papaθanaˈsiu]) (var. Papathanssiou), is a Greek composer of electronic, new age and classical music and musical performer, under the artist name Vangelis Papathanassiou (Βαγγέλης Παπαθανασίου) or just Vangelis (a diminutive of Evangelos; pronounced /vænˈdʒɛlɨs/ in English). He is best known for his Academy Award winning score for the film Chariots of Fire, and scores for the films Blade Runner and 1492: Conquest of Paradise.

Biography

(1943-1960) Formative years
On March 29, 1943, Vangelis (a diminutive of Evangelos) was born near Volos, Greece. He began composing at the age of four, and is largely a self-taught musician. He refused to take traditional piano lessons, and throughout his career did not have substantial knowledge of reading or writing musical notation. He studied painting, an art he also practices, at the Academy of Fine Arts in Athens.

(1961-1972) Work in bands
In the early 1960s he was one of the founders of pop group The Forminx (or The Formynx), which became very popular in Greece. Based in Thessaloniki in the north of the country, the five-piece band played a mixture of cover versions and their own material, the latter written mostly by Vangelis but still sung in English, something which was unusual in Greece at that time. The Forminx released nine hit singles and a Christmas EP before disbanding in 1966 at the peak of their success. A film being made about them at the time was never finished. Vangelis spent the next two years mostly studio-bound, writing and producing for other Greek artists.

Around the time of the student riots in 1968, Vangelis founded progressive rock band Aphrodite's Child together with Demis Roussos, Loukas Sideras and Anargyros ("Silver") Koulouris. After an unsuccessful attempt to enter the UK, they found a home in Paris, where they recorded their first single, a hit across much of Europe called Rain and Tears. Other hit singles followed, and two albums (which combined sold over 20 million copies), but when the record company demanded a third album, Vangelis conceived the ground-breaking double-album 666, based on Revelation, the last book in the Bible, and now considered pivotal in the development of progressive rock and concept albums. Tensions between members during the recording of 666 eventually caused the split of the band in 1971, but the album was still released in 1972. Despite the split, Vangelis has since produced several albums and singles for Demis Roussos, who has in turn contributed vocals to the Blade Runner soundtrack.

(1970-1972) Early solo works
Even while still in Aphrodite's Child, Vangelis had already been involved in other projects which strongly hinted at a future career as a solo musician. In 1970 he had composed the score for a little-known film called Sex Power (Demis Roussos provided some vocals). In 1971 some jam sessions with a group of musicians at Marquee Studios in London had resulted in two albums' worth of material, unofficially released without Vangelis' permission in 1978, titled Hypothesis (aka Visions of the Future), and The Dragon. Vangelis took action to have them withdrawn. A more successful project was his scoring of wildlife films made by French filmmaker Frédéric Rossif. The first was L'Apocalypse des Animaux, released in 1973 though it may have been recorded as early as 1971. In 1972, the student riots of 1968 provided the inspiration for an album titled Fais que Ton Rêve Soit Plus Long que la Nuit (Make your dream last longer than the night), comprising musical passages mixed with news snippets and protest songs - some lyrics were based on graffiti daubed on walls during the riots.

(1973-1980) Solo career
In 1973 Vangelis' solo career began in earnest. His first "official" solo album was Earth, though it did actually feature a group of musicians including ex-Aphrodite's Child guitarist Silver Koulouris and also vocalist and songwriter Robert Fitoussi (better known as F.R. David of "Words Don't Come Easy" fame). This line-up, later briefly going out under the name "Odyssey," released a single in 1974 titled "Who," but that was Vangelis' last involvement with them. Later in 1974, Vangelis was widely tipped to join another prog-rock band, Yes, following the departure of Rick Wakeman. After a couple of weeks of rehearsals it became clear that things were not going well and he never did join the band (they ended up hiring Swiss keyboard player Patrick Moraz, who later joined the Moody Blues). Vangelis did however become friends with Yes' lead vocalist Jon Anderson, and later worked with him on many occasions, including as the duo Jon & Vangelis.

After moving to London, Vangelis signed with RCA Records, set up his own studio, Nemo Studios, very close to Marble Arch, and began recording a string of electronic albums, such as Heaven and Hell (1975), Albedo 0.39 (1976), Spiral (1977), Beaubourg (1978), and China (1979). Parts of Heaven and Hell were later used as the theme to the PBS television series Cosmos by Carl Sagan. A melody from Albedo 0.39 called "Alpha" was also used in Cosmos. Another part (the song "So Long Ago, So Clear"), featured guest vocals by Jon Anderson, marking the start of that successful partnership. Vangelis also contributed as a producer and keyboard player to the album Phos, which was perhaps the most important recording by Greek rock band Socrates Drank the Conium (later known simply as Socrates).

In 1979 Vangelis provided the score for another animal documentary by Frédéric Rossif. Called Opera Sauvage, and almost as well known as L'Apocalypse des Animaux, the resulting soundtrack would bring him to the attention of some of the world's top filmmakers. The music itself would be re-used in other films (most notably the track "L'Enfant" in The Year of Living Dangerously (1982) by Peter Weir) and television commercials (the track "Hymne", used in Barilla pasta commercials in Italy and Ernest & Julio Gallo wine ads in the US).

(1981-1999) Film work
Chariots of Fire
In 1981 Vangelis wrote the score for the film Chariots of Fire, set at the Paris Olympics in 1924. The choice of music was unorthodox—while most period films featured traditional orchestral scores, Vangelis' music was modern and synthesizer-heavy. The movie won a half-dozen awards, including an Academy award for Best Picture of the year. Vangelis won the Academy Award for Original Music Score. The opening theme of the film was released as a single in 1982, topping the American Billboard chart for one week after climbing steadily for five months. Only one other instrumental track, 1985's "Miami Vice Theme," by Czech musician Jan Hammer, has topped that chart since.

Greek musician Stavros Logarides claimed Vangelis had copied the melody of "Titles" from one of his compositions called "City of Violets". Once a member of a 1970s band called Poll and actually a friend of Vangelis at that time, Logarides sued Vangelis for plagiarism in 1987. When the case came to court, Vangelis set up synthesizers in the courtroom and played for the judge and all others present, though less for entertainment purposes and more so he could demonstrate his compositional process.[1] The judge ruled that "Titles" was a Vangelis original, being a strong, vibrant piece of music, whereas "City of Violets" was fairly sombre and somewhat mournful by comparison, and any similarities in the melody were minor.

In February 1981, Vangelis, together with Jon Anderson, adapted the main theme from Chariots of Fire with lyrics for his friend Demis Roussos. It was recorded at Vangelis' London Nemo Studios and released as a single,"Race to the End", in March 1981.

Other notable Vangelis soundtracks were Antarctica for Nankyoku Monogatari in 1983, and The Bounty in 1984. Vangelis also collaborated in 1981 and 1986 with Italian singer Milva, achieving a large success especially in Germany with the albums Ich Hab' Keine Angst and Geheimnisse. (I am fearless and Secrets) The Italian language Nana Mouskouri Album also featured her singing his composition Ti Amero. Collaboration numbers with lyricist Mikalis Bourboulis sung by Maria Farantouri included the tracks Odi A, San Elektra, and Tora Xero

Blade Runner
In 1982, Vangelis began a collaboration with director Ridley Scott, writing the score for the science fiction film Blade Runner (1982). Capturing the isolation and melancholy of Harrison Ford's character Rick Deckard, the Vangelis score is as much a part of the dystopian environment as the decaying buildings and ever-present rain.

Unfortunately, a disagreement led to Vangelis withholding permission for his performance of the music from Blade Runner to be released, and the studio instead hired a group of musicians dubbed "The New American Orchestra" to record the official LP released at the time. It would take 12 years before things could be worked out and Vangelis's own work be released in the United States in 1994. Yet this soundtrack was still incomplete, as the film contained some non-Vangelis tracks as well. Over the years a series of bootleg recordings of Blade Runner soundtrack from unknown sources have been released, mostly targeted to collectors as "private releases," that contain most of the music cues (including the Ladd Company logo theme). A 3 disc boxset has been released in late 2007 containing the 1994 album, a second disc containing some more of the missing music cues and a third disc of new Vangelis material inspired by Blade Runner. Unfortunately, the 2007 release is still missing some incidental music, most notably the background music from the Taffey Lewis bar scene featuring vocals by Demis Roussos.
1492: Conquest of Paradise
In 1992, Paramount Pictures released the film 1492: Conquest of Paradise, also directed by Ridley Scott, as a 500th anniversary commemoration of Christopher Columbus' voyage to the New World.

Other works
Vangelis also scored a number of undersea documentaries by Jacques-Yves Cousteau. In 1992, France made him a Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters.

In 1983 Vangelis wrote the music for Michael Cacoyannis' staging of the Greek tragedy Elektra which was performed featuring Irene Papas at the open-air amphitheater at Epidavros in Greece. The same year Vangelis composed his first score for a ballet by Wayne Eagling. It was originally performed by Lesley Colier and Wayne Eagling himself at an Amnesty International gala in Drury Lane, but in 1984 the Royal Ballet School presented it again at the Sadler's Wells theater. In 1985 and 1986, Vangelis wrote two more ballets: "Frankenstein - Modern Prometheus" and "The Beauty and the Beast". In 1992, Vangelis composed music for the intense dramatic performance "Medea" by Euripides, starring Irene Papas, Carlos Lucena, Manuel de Blas, Jordi Dauder and Miquel Cors. Director Nuria Espert is considered to be one of the best theater actresses and directors in Spain. The play was staged in Barcelona during July 1992 and was produced by the Olympic Festival of Arts. The sound design was by Denis Vanzetto who also worked various Vangelis albums.

During the 1980s and 1990s, Vangelis and Jon Anderson released four albums together as Jon & Vangelis.

The Olympic Games
In May 2000, Vangelis composed the music as well as designed and directed the artistic Olympic flag relay portion of the Closing Ceremonies of the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games. The performance prompted many, including Vangelis himself, to think that he would play an influential role in the artistic development of the 2004 Athens Olympic Games. The Athens Olympic Committee (ATHOC) had other plans, however, and perhaps to the dismay of much of the Greek populace, the job was given to someone else. Speculation suggests that internal politics won the day and Olympic planners simply wanted a more contemporary, less Greek image for the Games. STATUS magazine author Nikos Mouratidis interviewed Vangelis in June 2002 and concluded the following:

Since Vangelis is so familiar with Greek mythology, he should know that Greece is just like Saturn, who ate his children. And Greece prefers to eat Vangelis who is its child rather than all those who have little to do with Greece, tradition, culture and its dreams.

While no official recording of Vangelis' composition for the 2000 Sydney Games exists, the music can be heard accompanying the presentation of the emblem of the 2004 Athens Games (YouTube Video).

In 2001, Vangelis performed live and released Mythodea, a predominantly orchestral rather than electronic piece that was originally written in 1993, and used by NASA as the theme for the Mars Odyssey mission.

In 2001 Vangelis once more composed music for Irene Papas' play - "Las Troyanas". In 2002 he wrote music for staging of Shakespeare's "The Tempest" to open the new Hungarian National Theater.

In 2004, Vangelis released the score for Oliver Stone's Alexander, continuing his involvement with projects related to his homeland.

In 2007, Vangelis released 2 albums. First was a 3CD set for the 25th Anniversary of Blade Runner, titled Blade Runner Trilogy. Second is the soundtrack for the Greek movie, El Greco, titled El Greco Original Motion Picture Soundtrack.

Vangelis' website, "Vangelis Information World",[1] went online in 1996 with an announcement of Oceanic but since then it has been under construction.[2]

When I looked it up, I found it was the name given in Greek mythology to a fabled land far to the north, where the sun shines 24 hours a day and the people live a thousand years. Various locations for Hyperborea have been suggested, including Greenland, Scandinavia and Siberia, although it could be anywhere above the Arctic Circle. Images used in the vid are of the 'midnight sun' and the 'northern lights', both of which would have been visible from Hyperborea.

Martin was born on December 24, 1971, in San Juan, Puerto Rico, the only child of his mother, Nerieda Morales, who was an accountant; his father Enrique Martin Negroni, was a psychologist. His parents divorced when he was two, and both later remarried, giving Martin three more step-siblings from his father's second marriage. Though no one in his family was connected to show business, Martin was drawn to the spotlight as a child.

At the age of 12, Martin auditioned to become a member of the band Menudo, a manufactured Latin pop group composed of young Hispanic adolescent musicians who were rotated out of the group as they advanced into their teen years. When Martin was 17, however, he left the group and returned to Puerto Rico to complete high school.

Solo Career
After completing high school, Martin left San Juan and moved to New York. Later, Martin moved to Mexico City where he started acting, first in theater productions, and then in a soap opera ("telenovela") titled Alcanzar una estrella II (Reach for a Star). A film based on the series was produced in which Martin played "Pablo," earning a Heraldo Award in 1993.

While acting in Mexico, Martin was signed to Sony Discos, the company's Latin imprint, in 1990. He released his first solo album, the Spanish-language Ricky Martin, in 1991, which included the single "Fuego Contra Fuego." The hit release earned gold records in Mexico, Argentina, Chile, Puerto Rico, and the United States, and he performed a string of sold-out concert dates across South America.

The first and most prominent single was "Livin' La Vida Loca," which reached number one in many countries around the world, including the U.S., the U.K., Argentina, Australia, Brazil, France, Turkey, Greece, India, Israel, Italy, Japan, Guatemala, Mexico, Russia, and South Africa. This album became one of the top-selling albums of 1999, and was certified 7 times platinum, selling over 17 million copies worldwide.

After the success of Ricky Martin, a new English-language album, Sound Loaded, was released in November 2000. Though the album did debut in the top ten (number four), it failed to reach number one. Three singles were released from Sound Loaded: the first was "She Bangs," which was followed by a duet with Christina Aguilera called "Nobody Wants to Be Lonely". Unlike the first two singles released from Ricky Martin, neither of the first two singles from this album reached the U.S. Top Ten on Billboard's Hot 100; they reached twelve and thirteen respectively. The album contained reworkings of two of his early songs Fuego contra fuego and El amor de mi vida. In the same year, he released his English greatest hits album, The Best of Ricky Martin, which went on to sell over one million copies. The album contained no new material save for two remixes of the track Amor. Both remixes were released to radio in some European countries and a cd single was also released.

In 2003, Martin released a new Spanish album "Almas del Silencio" ("Souls of Silence"). The first single, "Tal Vez", went to number one on the Latin Charts and stayed there for twelve weeks. He said of the new album: "I really needed to go back to focus, to my center, to the beginning. I had the need to search within, and really dig deep, and find those emotions that, because of the adrenaline and the euphoria that I lived for a couple of years, were probably sabotaged."[2] Almas del Silencio debuted at number twelve on the Billboard 200, reached number one on the Latin Albums charts and stayed there for six weeks. The next singles, "Jaleo" and "Y Todo Queda en Nada", reached number one on the Latin Charts, and the album sold more than 1 million copies worldwide [1].

On October 11, 2005 Martin released his first English language album since 2000's Sound Loaded and the tenth album of his career. Most of the songs on the album, called Life, were co-written by Martin. He commented on the album: "I was really in touch with my emotions. I think this album is very multi-layered, just like life is. It's about feeling anger. It's about feeling joy. It's about feeling uncertainty. It's about feeling. And all my emotions are part of this production."[3] The album debuted at number six on the Billboard Top 200 Albums chart. The first single from the album was "I Don't Care"/"Qué Más Da", featuring guest appearances by Fat Joe and Amerie.

Another single was released "Drop It on Me", which did not chart. Soon after, Martin announced his Latin American tour called Una Noche con Ricky Martin/One Night Only, promoting his latest album Life. Starting in Latin America, the tour premiered on November 15 in Mexico City. After finishing the first leg of the tour (which included Latin America and the U.S.), he released his next single, "It's Alright" (Spanish version: "Déjate Llevar"). A different version appeared in France, which included additional vocals by French R&B singer M. Pokora. The song went to number 4 in France.[4]

Martin performed at the 2006 Winter Olympics Closing Ceremony in Turin. A few days later, he announced the second leg of his world tour (which included Europe and Africa) called One Night Only/Una Noche Con Ricky Martin World Tour. The second leg started on April 21 in Manchester, U.K., and ended on June 3 in Tel Aviv, Israel, including shows that sold-out in two hours (Italy and Finland). In addition, he performed at the World Cup Fan Party in Berlin (Brandenburger Tor) on June 7, 2006, and at Lebanon's Beiteddine Festival on May 27 at the BIEL seafront hall in Beirut and on May 28 in Egypt , his first concerts in the Arab world following a promise to Queen Noor on his 2005 visit to the Arab Conference in Jordan. During this visit, he recorded an Arabic/Spanglish version of "Drop It on Me", "Enta Omri" with Arabic pop star Cheb Mami. He and Enta were a touring duo. Their anticipated 8 month tour ended early due to a lack of advertising.

Chambao is a flamenco-electronic band originally from Málaga, Andalusia, Spain, known for a Flamenco Chill sound that fuses flamenco sounds and palos with electronic music. The name of the band is taken from an improvised form of beach tent that is constructed as a means of sheltering from the wind and sun.

Discovered by the Dutch musician Henrik Takkenberg, they started as a trio of Málaga musicians, María del Mar, Eduardo and Dani (who left the band in 2005) they have released two albums of their own. In 2003, they were winners of the Premios Ondas musical award for their debut album, Endorfinas en la mente (Endorphins in the Mind).

Their song Ahi Estás Tu is used in an advert in the United Kingdom advertising 'Andalusia'.

Pau Donés, born in Montanuy Huesca, Aragon and raised in Barcelona, worked for various groups before being able to take on his current project, Jarabe de Palo. He began at age 15 with his brother Marc, with whom he formed a group known as J.& Co.Band and later another one named Dentaduras Postizas. During this period he completed his musical tracks in Barcelona with a job at an advertising firm.

His greatest success came to him after a trip to Cuba, where he was inspired to write La Flaca which became the title of his first album in 1996. A year later came the big surprise: millions of albums were sold around the world, and "La Flaca" became the song of the summer in 1997.

After this great success on his first album, Pau was determined to show that the band would not be a one-hit wonder, and with this idea he launched Depende (1998), which was produced by Joe Dworniak in Moody Studios in London over a period of two months. This album featured collaborations with the likes of Ketama and continued with Jarabe de Palo's ironic and ingenious lyrics, which managed to connect with the Hispanic public and even made inroads among Italians.

In 2001 they released De vuelta y vuelta, their most conceptual album. It showed a change in the band with the first music video of the album, in which Pau appears shaving his head, shedding his long-haired features. This album featured collaborations with the likes of Antonio Vega, Jovanotti, Vico C and Celia Cruz.

In 2003 the band tried to show a change to more positive songs with their album Bonito, which featured the likes of Los Mártires del Compás, the singer-songwriter Elena Andujar and their Italian friend Jovanotti.

In autumn of 2004 the band announced that they would go on tour with their new album, 1 m2 (Un metro cuadrado (A Square Meter)) featuring the likes of Jorge Drexler, Lucrecia, and Chrissie Hynde (The Pretenders).

The group has received great awards such as Premios de la Música, Premio Ondas, and Grammy nominations. They have collaborated with La Vieja Trova Santiaguera, Antonio Vega, Vico C and Celia Cruz (soundtrack of El milagro de P. Tinto). Pau has also composed tracks for Ricky Martin and starred in a music video with Alanis Morissette. They also collaborated with Italian musicians Jovanotti and Niccolò Fabi.

Eric Patrick Clapton, CBE[2] (born 30 March 1945) [3], nicknamed Slowhand, is a Grammy Award-winning English rock guitarist, singer, songwriter and composer. He is one of the most successful musicians of the 20th and 21st centuries,[4] garnering an unprecedented three inductions into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (The Yardbirds, Cream, and solo). Often viewed by critics and fans alike as one of the greatest guitarists of all time, Clapton[5] was ranked fourth in Rolling Stone Magazine's list of the "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time"[6] and #53 on their list of the Immortals: 100 Greatest Artists of All Time.[7]

Although Clapton's musical style has varied throughout his career, it has always remained rooted in the blues. Clapton is credited as an innovator in several phases of his career, which have included blues-rock (with John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers and The Yardbirds) and psychedelic rock (with Cream). Clapton has also achieved great chart success in genres ranging from Delta blues (Me and Mr. Johnson) to pop ("Change the World") and reggae (Bob Marley's "I Shot the Sheriff"). Clapton also achieved fame with Derek and the Dominos through the hit song "Layla".

Early years
Clapton was born in Ripley, Surrey, England the son of 16 year old Patricia Molly Clapton and Edward Walter Fryer, a 24-year-old soldier from Montreal, Quebec, Canada; the two were not married. Fryer shipped off to war prior to Clapton's birth and then returned to Canada.

Clapton grew up with his grandmother, Rose, and her second husband Jack, believing they were his parents and that his mother was his older sister. Their surname was Clapp, which has given rise to the widespread but erroneous belief that Clapton's real surname is Clapp (Clapton is the name of Rose's first husband, Eric Clapton's maternal grandfather). Years later, his mother married another Canadian soldier, moved to Canada and left Eric with his grandparents. When Clapton was nine years old, he discovered the true situation when his mother and six year old half-brother, Brian, returned to England for a visit. The experience became a defining moment in his life. He stopped applying himself at school and became moody and distant from his family.[8] Brian died in 1974 in a road accident. Clapton also has two half-sisters from his mother's marriage: Cheryl (born in May 1953) and Heather (born in September 1958).[citation needed]

Clapton grew up quiet, shy, lonely and in his words a "nasty kid", who was very serious about his musical goals. However he is also known to have had a sense of humour.[9][10]

Clapton spent his secondary school years at the Hollyfield School in Surbiton. His first job was as a postman. Clapton received an acoustic Spanish Hoya guitar for his 13th birthday. He found learning the instrument very difficult and nearly gave up. He was influenced by the blues from an early age and practiced long hours to learn chords and copy the music of black blues artists that he listened to on his Grundig Cub tape recorder.

After leaving school, Clapton completed a one-year foundation art course in 1962 at the Kingston College of Art but he did not go on to undertake an art degree. Around this time Clapton began busking around Kingston, Richmond and the West End of London.[11] When he was 17 years old Clapton joined his first band. It was an early British R&B group called The Roosters. He stayed with this band from January through August in 1963. Clapton did a seven-gig stint with Casey Jones and the Engineers in October 1963.[12]

Clapton joined The Yardbirds, a blues-influenced rock and roll band, in 1963 and stayed with them until March 1965. Synthesising influences from Chicago blues and leading blues guitarists such as Buddy Guy, Freddie King and B.B. King, Clapton forged a distinctive style and rapidly became one of the most talked-about guitarists in the British music scene.[13] The band initially played Chess/Checker/Vee-Jay blues numbers and began to attract a large cult following when they took over the Rolling Stones' residency at the Crawdaddy Club in Richmond. They toured England with American bluesman Sonny Boy Williamson II; a joint LP, recorded in December 1963, was issued belatedly under both their names in 1965. In March 1965, just as Clapton left the band, the Yardbirds had their first major hit, "For Your Love", on which Clapton played guitar.

It was during his time with the Yardbirds that Clapton acquired the nickname "Slowhand". Whenever he broke a guitar string on stage he would immediately replace it himself; British audiences would respond with slow hand claps until he was finished and ready to play again. Inspired by this, and also in ironic reference to Clapton's 'fast' playing, the Yardbirds' manager Giorgio Gomelsky christened him "Slowhand" Clapton.[14]

Still obstinately dedicated to blues music, Clapton was strongly offended by the Yardbirds' new pop-oriented direction, partly because "For Your Love" had been written by pop songwriter-for-hire Graham Gouldman, who had also written hits for teen pop outfit Herman's Hermits and harmony pop band The Hollies. Clapton recommended fellow guitarist Jimmy Page as his replacement, but Page was at that time unwilling to relinquish his lucrative career as a freelance studio musician, so Page in turn recommended Clapton's successor, Jeff Beck.[15] While Beck and Page played together in the Yardbirds, the trio of Beck, Page, and Clapton were never in the group together. However, the trio did appear on the 12-date benefit tour for Action for Research into Multiple Sclerosis, as well as on the album Guitar Boogie, but not all on the same tracks.

Clapton joined John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers in April 1965. His passionate playing in nightclubs — and on the immensely influential album, Blues Breakers — established Clapton's name worldwide as a blues guitarist. With his 1960 Gibson Les Paul Standard guitar and Marshall amplifier, Clapton's playing by then had inspired a well-publicised graffiti that deified him with the famous slogan "Clapton is God". The phrase was spray-painted by an admirer on a wall in an Islington Underground station in the autumn of 1967. The graffito was captured in a now-famous photograph, in which a dog is urinating on the wall. Clapton is well reported to have been embarrassed by the slogan, saying in The South Bank Show profile of him made in 1987, "I never accepted that I was the greatest guitar player in the world. I always wanted to be the greatest guitar player in the world, but that's an ideal, and I accept it as an ideal." The phrase began to appear in other areas of Islington throughout the mid-60s.[16]

Cream
Clapton left the Bluesbreakers in July 1966 (to be replaced by Peter Green) and then formed Cream, one of the earliest supergroups. Cream was also one of the earliest "power trios", with Jack Bruce on bass (also of Manfred Mann, the Bluesbreakers and the Graham Bond Organisation) and Ginger Baker on drums (another member of the GBO). Before the formation of Cream, Clapton was all but unknown in the United States; he left The Yardbirds before "For Your Love" hit the American Top Ten, and had yet to perform there.[17][18] During his time with Cream, Clapton began to develop as a singer and songwriter, as well as guitarist, though Bruce took most of the lead vocals and wrote the majority of the material with lyricist Pete Brown.[19] Cream's first gig was an unofficial performance at the Twisted Wheel in Manchester on 29 July 1966 before their full debut two nights later at the National Jazz and Blues Festival in Windsor. Cream established an enduring legend on the high-volume blues jamming and extended solos of their live shows, while their studio work was focused on shorter versions of the same songs.

In early 1967, Clapton's status as Britain's top guitarist was rivalled by the emergence of Jimi Hendrix. Hendrix attended a performance of the newly formed Cream at the Central London Polytechnic on 1 October 1966, during which Hendrix sat in on a shattering double-timed version of "Killing Floor". Top UK stars including Clapton, Pete Townshend, The Rolling Stones and The Beatles avidly attended Hendrix's early club performances. Hendrix's arrival had an immediate and major effect on the next phase of Clapton's career, although Clapton continued to be recognised in UK music polls as the premier guitarist.

It was with Cream that Clapton first visited the USA. They went to New York in March 1967 for a nine show stand at the RKO Theater. They returned to New York to record Disraeli Gears from 11 May - 15 May 1967.

Cream's repertoire varied from soulful pop ("I Feel Free") to lengthy blues-based instrumental jams ("Spoonful") and featured Clapton's searing guitar lines, Bruce's soaring vocals and prominent, fluid bass playing, and Baker's powerful, polyrhythmic jazz-influenced drumming.

In a mere twenty-eight months Cream had immense commercial success, selling millions of records and playing to standing-room only crowds throughout the U.S. and Europe. They redefined the instrumentalist's role in rock and were one of the first bands to emphasise musical virtuosity, skill and flash. Their U.S. hit singles include "Sunshine of Your Love" (#5, 1968), "White Room" (#6, 1968) and "Crossroads" (#28, 1969) - a live version of Robert Johnson's "Cross Road Blues."

Although Cream was hailed as one of the greatest groups of its day, and the adulation of Clapton as a guitar hero reached new heights, the band was destined to be short-lived. The legendary infighting between Bruce and Baker and growing tensions among all three members eventually led to Cream's demise. Another significant factor was a strongly critical Rolling Stone review of a concert of the group's second headlining U.S. tour, which affected Clapton profoundly. By this time he had also fallen deeply under the spell of the music of The Band after they had released the album Music from Big Pink and began to believe that rock music was heading in a new direction. He was so infatuated with them that he even asked to join them, but was turned down.[20]

Cream's farewell album, Goodbye, featured live performances recorded live at The Forum, Los Angeles, 19 October 1968, and it was released shortly after Cream disbanded in 1968; it also featured the studio single "Badge", co-written by Clapton and George Harrison, whom he had met and become friends with after the Beatles had shared a bill with the Clapton-era Yardbirds at the London Palladium. The close friendship between Clapton and Harrison resulted in Clapton's playing on Harrison's "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" from the Beatles' White Album. By all accounts the presence of an outsider, especially of Clapton's calibre, had the effect of bringing peace to the disharmonious band. In the same year of release as the White Album, Harrison released his solo debut Wonderwall Music that became the first of many Harrison solo records to feature Clapton on guitar, who would go largely uncredited due to contractual restraints. The pair would often play live together as each other's guests. A year after Harrison's death in 2001, Clapton helped organise the tribute concert, for which he was musical director.

Since their 1968 breakup, Cream briefly reunited in 1993 to perform at the ceremony inducting them into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. A full-scale reunion of the legendary trio took place in May 2005, with Clapton, Bruce and Baker playing 4 sold-out concerts at London's Royal Albert Hall (the scene of their 1968 farewell shows) and 3 more at New York's Madison Square Garden that October. Tiziano Ferro (born February 21, 1980 in Latina) is an Italian latin pop singer. He also records Spanish versions of his Italian albums and has had notable success in Europe and Latin America.

In 1997 he participated in the Sanremo Music Festival but didn't make it past the first week of selections. In 1998 he was among the 12 finalists, and was discovered by two producers, Alberto Salerno and Mara Majonchi.

His 2002 debut album, Rosso Relativo was characterized by a R&B/hip-hop flavor (although there was some controversy when the Italian satirical TV show Le Iene pointed out the similarity between his first hit single "Perdono" and a previous song by R.Kelly called "Did You Ever Think"). The Spanish version of this album was called Rojo Relativo and fared very well throughout Spanish-speaking parts of the world.

In late 2003, Ferro released his second album, 111 Centoundici. It affirmed his place as one of Italy's top pop stars.

In 2004, he released his first English-language single, "Universal Prayer", in Europe. The single was recorded to promote the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece. The song is a duet with British R&B star Jamelia. In that same year at the 2004 MTV Europe Music Awards held in Rome he won Best Italian Act and performed his hit song "Sere nere". He also made a guest appearance in the first season of the hit Mexican TV drama Rebelde.

In 2006 his third studio album Nessuno è solo was released and debuted at number one in Italy and Argentina. It debuted at #10 in Chile, #14 in Mexico, and #11 in Spain. The album was certified triple platinum. On March 25, 2007, Ferro was invited to perform at the prestigious celebration of Radio Italia's 25th anniversary.

Controversy
In May 2006, Tiziano Ferro made controversial comments about Mexican women during an interview on the Italian television show Che tempo che fa on Italy's Rai Tre television network. He stated that it was impossible to say that Mexican women are the most beautiful women in the world, claiming they had moustaches, and insinuated that Salma Hayek is the one exception. The interviewer, Fabio Fazio, asked Ferro to stop and immediately distanced himself from the comments, apologizing to the audience and stating that In his personal opinion, Mexican women are among the most beautiful in the world. In the same interview, Ferro stated that he was surprised a country like El Salvador could exist, and described Colombia as unsafe. Ferro's comments were not well taken by the Mexican media. Furthermore, several hosts from important radio and TV shows in Mexico disapproved of Ferro's comments. ANDA, Mexico's music artists' organization, announced that it will not give Ferro permits to perform or work in Mexico until he makes an appropriate apology. For his part, Ferro claims that his comments were part of a pre-planned, ironic and joking skit where he made fun of his home country, Italy, himself, and other topics, but that it was misrepresented when put on air. He has booked interviews with prominent Mexican radio stations to try to explain himself.

In a recent interview with Spanish mediaAqui y ahora he recognized that he showed signs of immaturity and that he was "stupid".

On October 3, 2006 he made his first public presentation in Mexico in the night TV show Otro Rollo and he recognized his mistake. Six days later he had a private showcase in Mexico City's "Hard Rock Cafe" for his fans.

Fur Elise" (Für Elise) is probably Beethoven`s most popular piano work, which he dedicated to one of his female piano pupils in 1810.
Beethoven had made the acquaintance of the Malfatti family in Vienna in 1809 through Count Gleichenstein. He, Beethoven, was not only impressed by the culture, refinement and musical taste of the parents, but also by the beauty and intellect of the daughters Therese and Anna. Therese was a very good piano player and became Beethoven`s pupil; she was also the niece of Beethoven`s physician Dr. Malfatti. All this made the Malfatti house very attractive for Beethoven and also resulted in an unusually warm relationship between Beethoven and the Malfattis and a less severe regard for conventional forms. Though Beethoven almost certainly fell in love with Therese, the social difference was too great and nothing is known of a particular intimacy.
Experts are very sure that "Fur Elise" (Für Elise) is dedicated to Beethovens beloved Therese Malfatti. L. Nohl, Beethoven`s biographer possessed the original script and published the work in 1867, but he misinterpreted Beethoven`s handwriting -- instead of Therese he read "For Elise on 27. April, a dedication from L. v. Bthvn."
This kind of work for solo piano is often referred to as a bagatelle because it is quite short. It is in a-minor and is arranged like a short rondo. The initial melody of „Fur Elise" (Für Elise) is repeated several times and is interrupted by contradictory episodes in neighbouring keys

One of the versions of the story goes like this:

Beethoven wrote it as a birthday present for one of his pupils, Miss Therese Malfatti. He was probably broke or didn't realize what women would really enjoy!? He was in love with her and even asked her to marry him. Unfortunately, nothing came out of this, as Therese's father (Dr.Giovanni Malfatti, who treated Beethoven in his final illness) objected to the union and she married Baron Von Drosdick in 1816.

Because of his very scruffy handwriting ( he probably wrote in old German) his publisher just spelled it as Fur Elise. In a letter of May 1810 to Therese, Beethoven refers to the Bagatelle - "In this letter, beloved Therese, you are receiving what I promised you."

The Piano Sonata No. 14 in C-sharp minor "Quasi una fantasia", Op. 27, No. 2, by Ludwig van Beethoven, is popularly known as the "Moonlight" Sonata. The work was completed in 1801[1] and rumored to be dedicated to his pupil, 17-year-old Countess Giulietta Guicciardi,[2] with whom Beethoven was, or had been, in love.[3] The name "Moonlight" Sonata derives from an 1832 description of the first movement by music critic Ludwig Rellstab, who compared it to moonlight shining upon Lake Lucerne.[4][1]

Beethoven included the phrase "Quasi una fantasia" (Italian: Almost a fantasy)[5] in the title partly because the sonata does not follow the traditional sonata pattern where the first movement is in regular sonata form, and where the three or four movements are arranged in a fast-slow-[fast]-fast sequence.

The sonata has three movements:

Adagio sostenuto
Allegretto
Presto agitato
The first movement is written in a kind of truncated sonata form. A melody that Hector Berlioz called a "lamentation" is played (mostly by the right hand) against an accompanying ostinato triplet rhythm. The movement is also played pianissimo or "very quietly", and the loudest it gets is mezzo-forte or "moderately loud". The movement has made a powerful impression on many listeners; for instance, Berlioz wrote that it "is one of those poems that human language does not know how to qualify." The work was very popular in Beethoven's day, to the point of exasperating the composer, who remarked to Czerny, "Surely I've written better things."[6]

The second movement is a relatively conventional minuet and trio; a moment of relative calm written in D-flat major. This key signature is enharmonically equivalent to C-sharp major, that is, the tonic major for the work as a whole. The slightly odd sound of the first eight bars seems to be the result of the minuet starting in the "wrong" key; i.e. the dominant key of A-flat major. The music settles into D-flat only in the second phrase, bars 5-10.

The stormy final movement, in sonata form, is the weightiest of the three, reflecting an experiment of Beethoven's (also carried out in the companion sonata, Opus 27 no. 1 and later on in Opus 101) placement of the most important movement of the sonata last. The writing has many fast arpeggios and strongly accented notes, and an effective performance demands flamboyant and skillful playing.

Of the final movement, Charles Rosen has written "it is the most unbridled in its representation of emotion. Even today, two hundred years later, its ferocity is astonishing."

The musical dynamic that predominates in the third movement is in fact piano. It seems that Beethoven's heavy use of sforzando notes, together with just a few strategically located fortissimo passages, creates the sense of a very powerful sound in spite of the overall dynamic.

Beethoven's pedal mark
At the opening of the work, Beethoven included a written direction that the sustain pedal should be depressed for the entire duration of the first movement. The Italian reads: "Si deve suonare tutto questo pezzo delicatissimamente e senza sordino" ("The entire piece [meaning movement] must be played as delicately as possible and without dampers."). The modern piano has a much longer sustain time than the instruments of Beethoven's day. Therefore, his instruction cannot be followed by pianists playing modern instruments without creating an unpleasantly dissonant sound. One option for dealing with this problem is to perform the work on a restored or replicated piano of the kind Beethoven knew. Proponents of historically informed performance using such pianos have found it feasible to perform the work respecting Beethoven's original direction.

For performance on the modern piano, most performers today try to achieve an effect similar to what Beethoven asked for using pedal changes only where necessary to avoid excessive dissonance. For instance, the Ricordi edition of the score posted at the external link given below does include pedal marks throughout the first movement. These are the work of a 20th century editor, meant to facilitate performance on a modern instrument. "Half pedaling"—a technique involving a partial depression of the damper pedal—is also often used to simulate the shorter sustain of the early nineteenth century pedal. Charles Rosen (reference below) suggests both half-pedaling and changing the pedal a fraction of a second late.
